That they sell our data? Yeah, its an absolute scumbag company.
That would require addon author participation. Github wouldnāt pay. Curse does. Thatās the primary issue.
That said, there is nothing stopping anyone from uploading any addon to anywhere they want. Curse doesnāt own any of the addons, nor do the authors that write them. Every addon in existence belongs to Blizzard.
Trying to monetize addons is going to blow up in their face.
All I pointed out is that is what they apparently stated for whatever they are doing in regards to THIS project. I dont even know if they are telling the truth and no I dont know what they do in regards to HoTS.
you honestly believe they arent going to pull the same crap with wow that they do with hearthstone and HotS? also this:
Iām going back to doing them by hand. I created a list of the most important ones I use and what version they are at. I will check every few weeks to see if any are updated and do them.
I already followed up with āI am suspiciousā. Providing information is just that. Just like pointing out how they handle HoTS. Neither is right or wrong until they actually submit it.
They might be able to make ads appear in game. They may not do it. Iām sure some people will end up using it and we shall see. I am probably going to avoid Overwolf just on the basis that they have been found selling information.
Keep it secure⦠Dude theyāre going to sell it as many times as they can⦠That is their true revenue stream.
Read the article on wowhead. Overwolf already throwing their weight around and basically told WowUP theyāll shut down the API that allows them to connect⦠and then did a whole huge post about addons that do scraping etcā¦
Personally Iāll never install their garbage.
Letās not pretend like other places donāt do the same thing. When is the last time you read raiderio tos. They pretty much admit they are sharing our information with anyone and everyone.
If there is no alternative to an addon manager, and thereās lots of people who have a ton of addons they like. Your best bet is to only update once in awhile, then unistall the PoS.
Thatās what iāmma be doing if Wowup is blocked. It sucks but /shrug
I have always updated manually, and when twitch went through that hacking debacle, any inclination to ever use it went out the door. It really doesnt take long to just manually do it, and your addons tell you when to update it anyway. It really isnāt that much of a hassle.
If enough people just ignore overwolf and just manually do it, they will scrap it and will lose a ton of money for trying to monetize it, which is a win for us
Yeah, if this is headed the way it appears, Iāll be doing the same.
Iāve donated to the authors through the sites because I donāt have an issue providing something for their time when I use the product of their labor, but I wonāt support an intrusion of advertising.
Then again, I only use DBM, WA, & Details so manually downloading is my norm.
Iāve always just updated manually. I donāt trust weird, third party doodads. Didnāt realize it was so uncommon.
Glad this wonāt ha e any effect for me I donāt use any addons lol
Well, good side effect of this is that I have no reason to keep twitch.
I been playing with my add-on set up for so long, with frames, bars, and other pvp & pve addons that if I didnāt have them, it wouldnāt feel like the same game & not an option I will consider. And to be honest manually updating like I did in bc-mop does not seem appealing, especially after # of used addons has grown. Then if I am forced to use Overwolf with all their junk and adds, I would consider wow too be to much of a pain in the a$$ to play. especially considering I just returned a bit over a month ago after quitting at the end of legion. So another perspective blizzard/activision could see is how Overwolfs monopoly of addon management + shady reputation & business practice could negatively effect their business. considering some players concider addons a must and the only option for addon management for wow having a negative reputation with the player baseā¦bad for business.
I switched to WoWUp. Open Source, easy to use and community supported, so it should have a degree of protection from the scummy business practices.
I keep it for the free games
Oh dear God! I donāt know how you can handle the default UI. It is the absolute worst UI of any MMO I have ever played, and I have tried a many MMO.
Which Overwolf is going to shut off from the repositories API when they go to an ad/subscription service so that Wowup no longer works.
Sounds like theyāre in discussions about that. Iām hopeful, but realistic. If you can make money out of something and have the ability to force your hand on the issue⦠why wouldnāt you?
What I will say is that Iām relatively confident that Blizzard will smack them down if they try to force adās to play in game. At least⦠I sincerely hope Bliz wouldā¦
