Amazon/Twitch sold Curseforge.com to a company called Overwolf. Overwolf makes an API that allows developers to create game overlays for streaming and other purposes.

In November, Twitch will stop serving addons in their App and you’ll need to use a new app from Overwolf. People say Addon developers will embrace Overwolf because they get paid through Curseforge ads. Addon users don’t like Overwolf because their third-party clients are probably going to be cut off from the API.

Personally, I’ve been meaning to switch to Elvui and this gives me incentive to do so. They have their own addon update app. Other’s I’ll just update manually each major patch. No big deal for me.

You don’t have to use any app to install addons. You can install them manually if you don’t want to deal with either Twitch or Overwolf.

Amazon sold CurseForge to a company, Overwolf, that is attempting to monopolize the monetizing of addons, and Blizzard doesn’t seem to care, despite it being wildly against the ToS.

They are attempting to create a monopoly addon storefront where they will so graciously give addon devs 70% of ad revenue, after they shut down the public API that allows smaller independent addon managers to function.

Taking a 30% cut of generated revenue from developers, why does that sound so familiar…

Full video pop up ads in wow, thats what this game was missing. Glad Overwolf is heroically delivering us what this game was so sorely lacking!

PS, if anyone from Blizzard reads this, you should sue the $%&^#$@ out of them for ripping off the Overwatch brand for their @^#$%@# adware services.

Dont expect Overwolf to keep your information secure either

Is Overwolf going to try to charge for addons?

Yes, subscription required to update more than one addon at a time*, and full video ads are the standard. Ads are in the overlay popups as well, at least they are in the HotS version of Overwolf that I tried for a few minutes. It is a steaming pile of hot flaming garbage.

Enjoy it, thats our new addon management solution.

*So I’ve read/heard

Wait, what!? Can somebody confirm this? No way I’m watching ads just to update my addons.

It’s a scumbag company that makes you use their in-game overlay and uses that to play ads in game so they can make money forcing them upon you. They are also notorious for malware and selling your data etc…I strongly recommend no one downloads their client as there is alternatives that are far superior.

If that’s the case, once Twitch drops the addons, I’m just going to manually update my stuff. I don’t use a ton of addons so won’t be too much of a hassle, but absolutely do not like Overwolf.

I’ll likely just move to downloading addons manually again.

Did it for years even after addon-managers, and still do it for Elvui, so it’s not really a big issue for me.

I want you to know that I am going to reinstall this adware on to my PC just so I can take screenshots for you.

How does one manually update addons? I am very much down for that vs. whatever craziness this is.

This is really, really bad. Dang, I love twitch. It is simple, one click and done. Not all this nonsense.

Download the addon to your PC. Extract the file, and move the files into your addons folder under Interface.

And just Google each addon to get the download?

What alternatives are there other than manual?
