What is Compute Effects?

I understand what its trying to do, which is anytime volumetric lighting effects is around it can…i assume interact with physics.

In Ardenwrold on my 3080/12900k, i get around 200fps~, then when i switch to Ultra Compute Effects it drops to around 110-120~.

But i can’t tell the difference…i tried to actually look at every scene where there is volumetric effects but i can’t tell the difference. However there is a massive hit to FPS.

There is no videos out on youtube or reddit search that can help as google goes, did you mean computer effects…

The easiest difference to find is the sparkles floating in the air in Ardenweald. If you disable Compute Effects, those disappear.

What are you switching to Ultra from? A lot of the more nuanced graphics settings, like Compute Effects, have massively diminishing returns as you go up in quality.

I just noticed in Kyrian, looking at the home base of Kyrian adds a bigger visual difference, adds like these white misty fog around kyrian.

However on Low it has almost 0 impact of FPS for the same visual, in Arden you see these little particles running around (Bugs).
However on On Low Kyrian the fog has a shimmering effect, and need Ultra, but the area seems super cpu bottlenecked so you notice no fps drop from ultra to low.

It is an interesting effect but its so hard to notice it in some areas unless your looking for it.

Volumetric fog. This article discusses it generally, and includes an image that allows you to move the cursor left or right to view an image with or without it disable (from another game).
