What is a DDOS?

Not memeing, what is it actually? Like how does it even happen and why does it slow servers?

It technically stands for distributed denial of service. Someone or some group floods the servers with requests so nobody else can get in, the servers can’t handle the bandwith of requests and that’s why it slows things down.

It’s like sending 10000 fake orders to Taco Bell, both the workers and the legit customers are in for a bad time.

I think it’s like when you send a bunch of fake requests to a server so the quality of service degrades for people who are trying to use it legitimately, or something like that

Ma’am this is a Wendy’s.

huh ok…

But why tho? like what do ppl gain from this lmao?

Or is this like a competing company trying to hurt Blizzard?

It’s like sending 10 fake orders to Wendy’s let’s be real :joy:

It’s when someone uses a botnet, that they either own or have created by some surreptitious means (Trojan malware) to send an overwhelming number of acknowledgement requests, or “pings” to a single IP address. Despite the ever increasing amounts of available bandwidth, this attack is still extremely effective because the processing power of network devices is simply not that good, and there are also many more online devices that can now serve as hosts for the attacking botnet.

Sometimes a DDOS is also an excuse to say we are receiving a lot of traffic at the same time, like a new wow release and the authentication server gets flooded.

Think traffic jam, everyone going to work at the same time in the morning. If the attack is malicious then the purpose is disruption.

But is it possible that this is a competing company?

Yeah that’s an even better example, like 10000 self-driving cars driving nobody deployed onto the highway.

Very doubtful, it’s a federal crime and I don’t think major game studios are going to risk prison time to do it.

It’s a computer operating system with a stutter.

To help the OP visualize:

Why would Joe Shmoe risk prison time to do it? I seriously doubt anyone has such a vendetta with WoW or Blizz that they’d be motivated by nothing.

I think my guess would be a former employee if anything.

It’s like trying to explain why some people vandalize stuff. Usually either a childish attempt to impress their friends, or just a malevolent desire to hurt and inconvenience innocent people.

You wouldn’t believe the excuses people use to do nefarious activities… sometimes all they need is an excuse, like their buddy saying, “I bet you can’t…” That being said, people who do this silliness should be hunted down and prosecuted hardcore!

Speaking on the behalf of Anonymous,

“We do it for the lulz”.

something incompetent studios use an excuse for poor service. its easy since there is no face required (unless you want to blame russia or 4chan), and you don’t have to provide any proof and can just say “well, you can’t prove it didn’t happen, right?”

basically, like religion.
