I’m very confused on this terminology and also how people use it ingame?! So lets just clear this up MEOW! :smile_cat: Are healers considered casters? Are casters when used inna sentence only referring to caster DPS? When u tell someone to pick up a caster —> “ warlock or mage?” Does boomkin or Elemental shaman classify as a caster DPS? If someone loots something and says “ Thats for a caster!” Are we referring to healers as well or are we separating healers and casters? Do you consider healers “casters” per the definition? I.e. CASTING A SPELL. Thouhts?! :cloud_with_rain:

There are only two forms of ability fighting:

Casting.

And

Melee.

Simple.

From what I understand, casters are ranged DPS. Does not include healers. For example, casters include: all mage specs, elemental shaman, boomkin, shadow priest, etc.

it’s actually Physical and Magic that are the different forms. cause some magic users do damage while not casting (dots, instant spells) and some physical dealers do damage out of melee range (hunters)

Subgroup of DPS. Ranged damage dealers.

Healers are technically casters, but “healers” is the better catch-all phrase. So when we say casters, we exclude healers, as casters is the subgroup of DPS.

The real divide is are Hunters considered casters. :thinking: I say no. They’re ranged… but they don’t cast. And it isn’t uncommon to have Hunters separate from the Casters in a raid set-up. A good but old example is the 2nd boss in Highmaul. Casters and Healers would stand together, but Hunters would swap between the two melee groups.

You’ll commonly hear “Casters and Hunters…” but never “Casters, except Hunters”.

Its tricky… tbh i guess. Cuz technically mm hunters and bm hunters “ Spirit heal” use “magic” but they don’t cast it I guess? But wailing arrow is Obviously a magic spell infused into an arrow? So idk I’m very confused!!! :cloud_with_rain: :sweat:

Since Hit Rating, and Spell Pen aren’t a thing anymore this would be anything with Intellect

It’s best to look at the very basics of the class. What they’re doing 90% of the time.
Things like Frostbolt, Fireball, Chaos Bolt, Drain Soul. Filler / common spells a caster uses every few seconds.

Arcane Shot, Kill Command, Steady Shot, Barbed Shot, etc. These are not casted magical spells, they’re arrows from a bow.

A warrior can throw an Axe that shatters shields and barriers. A rogue can fire a gun. That doesn’t make them Ranged.
That’s how I view Hunters with things like Wailing Arrow.
