Shadowlands: Zovaal Strikes Back

Iā€™d have Chromie inadvertently undo everything after AQ20 as a result of catching a really bad cold and sneezing at an inopportune moment. Following that, Iā€™d have the team rewrite the gameā€™s story from near-scratch in a way that makes sense narratively rather than to fit an xpac release cycle. Existential threats would happen less frequently and power creep would be kept under control, with no entities more powerful than the Lich King being fought until the penultimate and final expansions. Faction leaders wouldnā€™t be villain-batted nearly as frequently, and the smaller stories surrounding the races of the Horde and Alliance would get more attention.

DF can play out however it is going to play out. I donā€™t care at all save for making sure, without any shadow of a doubt, that the NEXT expansion is Light vs Void and in this expansion, EVERYTHING is changing.

The void wins. Straight up. We lose and our planet and selves is merged into the void and weā€™re placed in a twisted version of Azeroth. We ā€œwake upā€ believing everything in the past was a dream and THIS is our actual realityā€¦and this reality is REALLY bad.

For starters, the horde and alliance are no more. Azeroth has been overun by multiple competing super forces from the Burning Legion, the Scourge, Deathwing and the united Dragonflights, and even the Sha and Shadowlands too. Basically every worst case timeline all rolled up into 1. Weā€™re a united but pitifully weak force hiding underground just eeking out a meager existence and staying off the radar of the actual big bads all fighting each other for supremacy. This does away with the Horde vs Alliance into 1 unified faction.

Weā€™re no longer grand heroes and god slayers. Weā€™re barely even qualified to be basic adventurers. Now we live in a world where every moment is fraught with danger and peril. You want to fly? Sure go aheadā€¦the skies are always filled with demons and scourge and angry dragons and any/all other forms of nasties. Flight is done in short hops and always ā€œactiveā€. No just afking peacefully from point A to point B.

We truly believe this hellish reality is the true reality and weā€™re fighting for survival. This ultimately serves as a canon reset nuking us of our god mode power levels and serving as a narrative reset. We can return to old content as ā€œfalling back into a dream of a happier timeā€ where we slew titans and gods and reshaped reality like it was a normal Tuesday.

This, I believe, gives us the desperately needed canon reset while making a game everyone from the pleb casual the most tryhardiest of tryhards can participate in. Everything everyone does matters. The more people work/participate, the more we can make the world that much saferā€¦for a time. Our victories would be short lived and we can explore twisted/dark versions of storylines and even dungeons/raids. What if the world pillar in deepholm was never fixed? What if the elemental lords allied together and Rag led them? What if Deathwing and the other aspects stayed allied and seek to protect the worldā€¦by killing us all and seeing us as the enemy as much as the Burning Legion or anyone else isā€¦so many dark and twisted stories can come about and we can explore a world where we donā€™t just auto win everything because weā€™re awesome.

Iā€™d wait till the cheque cleared and then start pirating Mexican soap opera scripts, with the names changedā€¦ In crayon.

HAHAHAā€¦

MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!! THE POWER! THE CONTROL AT MY FINGERTIPS!!! ITS EVERYTHING IVE EVER DREAMED OF!

Here is my list of demands. I will add to it as I think of more. There are many:

  1. Underwater ā€œcontinentā€ stretching across Azerothā€™s coast consisting of ancient night elf ruins, Naga cities, ruined Ankoan towns, etc - basically going deep into the undersea cultures of Azeroth.
  2. Old world update. With BFA the world went through a second cataclysm and it needs to reflect a ten year period after that.
  3. The resettling of Gilneas - lotsa mountain Ettins and Gnolls have moved in and they gotta pushā€™em out.
  4. Kezan and Undermine revisited after the FIRST cataclysm and also every goblin townā€™s expansion after Gallywixā€™s BFA assets are seized - basically all the gold he made off the fourth war is either used for reparations or infrastructure
  5. I would EXPAND and OWN shadowlands. Itā€™s a unique take on death but I would like to reintroduce mystery into it - which wouldnā€™t be that hard. First step would just be clarifying that the zones we saw were just essentially the tip of the iceberg - outside of what we see, thereā€™s a whole ā€œplanetā€ out there.
  6. Remove the cannibalize racial from forsaken. Theyā€™ve been free from the lich kingā€™s control and have finally come to terms with the atrocities theyā€™ve committed. My people got therapy.

ā€¦ I will add more.

Verbally eviscerate them for what WoW has become.

Canā€™t say that on here.

I would then tell them that Arthas is going to make a comeback, and I will be working on that story from home. They can just put on their big boy pants and deal with it.

I would give Blood Elves a really nice pair of black tights.
Black tights are nice because they go with any top.

First of all, you and all the other hotties are headed to the dungeon. Next, Rita becomes queen, we save Gnomergan.

Now gnomes are put on strict population orders and given reproduction hormones, gnomes and goblins team up to enslave the rest of Azeroth. We mine the heck into the core and have an underground expansion. We discover all of Azerothā€™s continents because heads up we have boats!

I would apologize profusely, as Iā€™m almost certainly a worse writer than Steve Danuser, ask them to write me a FAT severance check and Iā€™d dip out before the sun dropped below the horizon.

I would hope theyā€™d show up on one of these:

Iā€™ll add player housing, then Iā€™ll blow the money on finding a wife and use my clout on my dating apps. Win-win for me.

Personally, I would introduce an expansion centered around Azerothian ā€œloose endsā€ in which the Archaeology and Fishing systems are expanded and retroactively fleshed out to give those activities unique and interesting rewards that differ in feel and theme from expansion to expansion. Iā€™d unlock all classes for all races and raise the account-wide character cap to 200. Iā€™d introduce raid scaling that can support any number of players, even one - allowing careful players to solo current raid encounters and get appropriate rewards.

Once upon a time in the dark deep voidā€¦there lurked an old god named Kerā€™mhatt who decided to devour all of Azeroth and neighbouring planets.

The End. (I love happy endings  )

Was this tonightā€™s King of the Hill episode?

If I had my way, Nā€™Zoth would have won at the end of BFA and its victory would have sent us all to the Shadowlands where we had to bargain and fight our way back to the living world which has changed in our absence. The only real safe place to go is the Dragon Isles, still shrouded from Nā€™Zoth as the dragon flights are compelled to return and prepare to be the last line of defense before Azeroth is wholly consumed. So itā€™s like our actual second chance after our failure. We have the down down of losing at the end of BFA, the struggle of Shadowlands, and the climax for Dragonflight. I even imagine a raid in the sword in Silithus because that would be pretty awesome. Void corrupted Legion remnants? The sword is a cocoon maybe? Not a perfect idea or even not a good one maybe, but Iā€™d prefer it over what we got and what we have now.

Deal with Baine starting up a sacrificial cult when he comes back to Azeroth. Now, that the afterlife is fixed, he sees it in his one true purpose to speed people towards their paradise. Heā€™ll suffer damnation to save everyone else.

Then tackle the theme of voluntary euthanasia cause everything needs a controversial element these days.

Give me a list of the current novel heroes and villains.

I have a butchers bill to organize. Time to drench this franchise in rich blood.

This is actually a good answer. Rather than try to ā€œit never happenedā€ the whole thing, we should try to fix it in the sequel. So, hereā€™s my pitch for Shadowlands 2:

Now that the threat of Zovaal has been dealt with, the covenants are free to argue amongst themselves. Nobody is happy with Pelagos as the new Arbiter: ā€œYou didnā€™t even give us a chance to nominate someone, you just picked the closest volunteer!ā€ Even the Kyrian are unhappy that it was one of their initiates that now sits as the Arbiter, believing there would be others more worthy of the role.

The covenants then turn on each other, and the Shadowlands just descends into civil war as they all plan to unseat Pelagos and install their own covenant leader as the new Arbiter.
