So I actually really like the idea of warlock being more of a tank ranged caster hybrid with high stam and armor from metamorphosis, demonic embrace, and life tap/drain life. The biggest problems I have with it now is that the gear in the game isn’t well suited for it since the cloth drops are pretty much all spell power/crit/int/spirit, etc.
I was thinking it’d be cool if they could wear leather at 40 like how warrior/paladin/hunter/shaman get to go up a tier. None of the casters ever get to move past cloth and after 40 it’s just druids and rogues still wearing leather. Leather also has higher levels of armor which works well with meta as well as higher levels of stam on a lot of the gear. It’d also make it easier to add sets that are shared between lock/druid/rogue since they all have a tanking spec in SoD. I know a lot of the leather sets don’t look very warlock-y, but I think it might be a nice feature for later content. What do you guys think?

as a warlock i think that would be too much… i believe the 500% armor increase you get is already equivalent to wearing plate at level 25 mitigation through armor for locks is waaaay ahead of the curve

I strongly endorse all buffs to the warlock class.
They probably not gonna do that but instead create cloth items with +armor on it.

That’s why you get 500% modifiers to the armor and apparently Blizzard is content to hand out bonus armor cloth pieces already. Dreamweave Vest is Cloth at 65 Armor and Carapace of Tuten’kash is Plate at 373. Meta turns Dreamweave into 390 Armor.
Now that being said, you need gear that’s worthwhile to wear that has Stamina some of the time, not Spirit, but Warlocks already have amazing Stamina scaling thanks to Demonic Embrace.
But you definitely don’t need higher base armor to work with. Warlocks are going to be insanely sturdy moving forward, and will only get tankier as they get Demo talents (assuming they go that route).
Getting 500% of Leather armor would be broken. Druids only get 360% from dire bear form.

This is what we want, though? While there are some pieces of cloth gear that have no stam, most of it has an OK amount and 5/5 Demonic Embrace will make up for the lower stamina amounts on cloth at 60. That being said, we absolutely want the “spell power/crit/int” because it’s necessary for us to tank. We are spell tanks. Higher SP and Crit means more threat which results in less need for holding back by DPS. Defense on gear would be a mostly worthless stat for us since we only benefit from a small amount Dodge on it; we already get 6% reduced chance to be crit by Meta, which not even warriors get at 60 with defense gear. We do get some benefit from AGI gear with the armor / dodge gain, but Blizz seems to be adding a little bit of that here and there so far; too much and our armor will end up higher than intended, though.
It’s actually pretty similar to how TBC Pally tanks had to gear too, except we’re better off because we’re not having to balance a mix of SP gear into tanking gear that was primarily STR / AP with no INT. You’d be severely lacking in threat if you didn’t have at least a minimal amount of +Spell Damage and would even more quickly OOM without enough INT.
Keep in mind locks and druids don’t get to wear shields, so the little bit extra on each piece by comparison probably helps make up that difference.
if warlocks get leather to go full demon hunter mode… i wanna get to wear plate on my priest and use a shield like old everquest sytle

that would require a massive amount of gear to be created. No way it is happening.

I don’t think they’ll even do that the warlock 6x armor modifier is stronk
My warlock already has one of the highest armour values in the game.
Not to mention decent shadow resistance, if cloth doesn’t eventually cut it at 50-60 I’d consider it. But for now it’s not an issue in the slightest.
You forgot you wouly also hand hunter, shamys or pallys rolling for your leather too
No…… they already have the same armour level as plate in meta lol
Wasn’t that originally intended, like waaaay back in the beta for Vanilla?

The PvP gear probably has lots of stam on it
Nah we don’t need any leather. The bonus is already like plate with most pieces, and even still there are cloth pieces weighted more toward bonus armor than bonus damage and mana. Distinct tank intended pieces already compensate for the future.
Warlocks are one of the strongest classes defensively. Giving us leather would be OP.
What warlocks need is a spammable shadow damage threat ability comparable to searing pain (or a way to make searing pain shadow) or they won’t be able to tank a large proportion of content at 60. Ditto shamans who need to have ways not to rely on fire damage.
Also they need more durability points on cloth tanking gear or they’re going to break constantly tanking longer raids.
