Yes, and we ended up getting the Wandering Ancient. The others were implemented as the Mage Tower meta reward (book/tome), and then there’s the slime cat for the s4 fated raids.
The other mounts were Nerubian Swarmer, which I think would slot in nicely as a wotlk collector’s bonus, which leaves the Caterpillar for…I’m not sure. Maybe mists of pandaria challenge mode timewalking?
Back early on in the original WotLK beta, the death knight flying mount was a dark gryphon that at least to me, looked way cooler than the skeleton gryphon it got changed to. That model lives on in the Chinese WoW client (since skellies are a no-no in that region).
It’s a long shot but I’d like to see a high rez version of that be the deluxe mount.

Seems like the type of thing that’d become a timewalking vendor mount.
It’s not Blizzard’s preferred gryphon variant anymore, but the Chinese version’s Winged Steed is really cool:
