What if rune of power was stuck to your back instead of on the ground?

Would you hate rune of power less if it moved with you and we just got a big rune visual on our backs instead of existing on the ground?

Then we would be closer to pallys with their wings out screaming DONT SCREW WITH ME RIGHT NOW!!!

Hey. Your suggestion may sound ridiculous, but it’s fully welcome in my book!

I would say no simply for the fact that it adds a multiplier with no flavor to it whatsoever when we already have that in the form of arcane surge, icy veins and combustion.

The more multipliers you add, the lower the base damage of all your abilities have to be.
There is already too many multipliers. Frostbolt outside of all the CDs, trinkets, procs, debuffs, buffs, etc. basically does less damage than a sneeze.

For the record, I think the OP was having a laugh. I fully agree about too many powerful damage modifiers being unhealthy for base damage on our spells.

Joking is not allowed on the forums. I’ll have to report him to the fun police.

It was the one armed man!

As much as Rune of Power is sometimes annoying, doing what you suggested is just a damage buff every 45 seconds, very boring.

If we want it changed, I would say something along the lines of this:
Improved Rune of Power : Standing on your rune of power fills you with arcane energy, transferring power from the rune into the mages body, allowing the amount of time spent on the rune, to be equaled standing off the rune.

or something like that. Something with flavor.

That would basically just be the old Arcane Power with more damage, on a shorter cooldown with a bigger visual. I would have no complaints about that.

Honestly, what if RoP moved with you through shimmer? Reduce the range of it slightly. Would feel better imo.

That’s what snowdrift should’ve been! But instead, it’s one of the many lousy mage abilities.

We really do need something to want melee players to stay away from us because playing the game blows right now.

Playing a mage in PvP feels like you’re trying to launch a rocket on a moving asteroid to succeed, while classes like DHs basically only have to play random notes on a piano to get passing grades.

Back in the days the duration was 3 minutes and you could put 2 of them, so you could blink from one another.
It was not too annoying back then

Perhaps if RoP’s buff lessened with distance instead of ceasing altogether? That seems a bit too close to how Incanter’s Flow works, perhaps, but requires active gameplay instead of being entirely passive.

Honestly I don’t mind RoP so much, it rewards good forethought (as much as the RNG-fest of ranged boss abilities allows, at least) but Incanter’s Flow doesn’t seem to come close most of the time. Heck, for Frost, IV’s guide doesn’t even mention it; it’s “Take RoP, end of story.” IF could use some attention. It should still be less than RoP, since it’s passive, but should still be a solid alternative on movement-heavy encounters.

I would actually hate it more, because it doesn’t alleviate the underlying problems with RoP, which is that it is such a huge portion of our allocated power budget hidden in a damage multiplier talent. It’s already not difficult to use if you are capable of counting to 10, and having it follow the Mage rather than be fixed would only further increase the issues of it being a mandatory talent. The only way it would ever work that way would be to nerf it to 15%, at which point why not just remove both it and IF and bake the damage into our auras?

Just delete it forever, give Mages a buff to their auras, and replace the talent with something that won’t make players angry for 10+ years.

Just use Incanter’s Flow, stop the whinning

You know why, I assume you have tried this? IF? Your DPS meter drops like a rock.

I think if RoP became something like the Azsharas font of power trinket it would be pretty cool.

Funny thing is that, according to mage-hub sims, in a vacuum, [Rune of Power] equals more dps than [Arcane Surge] for Arcane.

What if the choice was simply:

Rune of Power: Places a rune under yourself…
Rune of Devastation: Places a rune under your target…

Now that’s choice…people would still take Power on sanguine weeks, when things were gonna get kited, etc…but it would be a fun decision and not like it is currently…
