Heroic Companions of Azeroth
As champions return to Azeroth a new generation of heroes rise to begin their adventures, serving as students and companions to take on the newest challenges across the world. These companions are earned through quests and activities in multiple areas of the game and can join heroes in completing questing in open-world content and ‘adventure mode’ dungeons.
The Tavern - Home Away from Home!
Enter the Tavern, found in select capital cities across Azeroth, a customizable hall where your companions meet between adventures. Your companions and any unlocked benefits can be managed from the Tavern, which is accessible after a brief questline unlocked on reaching level 10, after choosing a class specialization.
Each companion has 2-3 available combat ‘specializations’, either Tank, Healer, DPS (Melee or Ranged), or Controller, which has an effect on their abilities and giving them a buff to their threat, recovery abilities, damage, and health respectively. Heroes may choose while in the Tavern to have allies manifest these different roles, even setting up an ‘Adventuring Party’, which can be used to complete normal modes of dungeons while solo. Players can also organize their adventuring party at any meeting stone while not in a party (Meeting Stones continue to be used for teleporting allies while in a group).
Adventure Mode: Terrible Foes, Terrific Companions!
Heroes now have access to ‘Adventure Mode’ as a difficulty for dungeons, which acts similar to timewalking, reducing your character’s level and adjusting your gear score to be appropriate for the dungeon you are entering. ‘Adventure Mode’ is equivalent to normal mode for dungeons and maintains the same loot tables and drop rates as normal mode. Adventure Mode has a separate lockout from a player’s dungeon allowance, limited to one every 2 hours, and a hero is locked into their current adventuring party for the duration once they enter the dungeon until it is completed (defeating the final boss) or the lock times out.
Everyone has a Story!
Companions have a level from 1-30, though they are immediately usable and scale at all levels of content. Instead, levels are used to represent the companion’s advancement with their combat skills, gaining additional abilities or enhancements that increases their utility, role selection, combat power, and advancement in their personal storyline. While in the Tavern, heroes can choose a number of companions each day (initially one) to gain additional world and daily quests, which will increase the companion’s level (generally gaining 1 level each day with the completion of all granted quests).
As your roster of companions increases and the Tavern is unlocked, new story campaigns become available that grants additional powers, cosmetic appearances, and even combo-abilities with other companions while in an adventuring party!
Here are sample advancement pattern for your companions:
