Atiesh, the Greatstaff or w/e it’s called.
ToEP and ZHC where the two most iconic items for caster pvp, if you saw a mage/warlock/ele/shadow pop either of those, you where probably about to get dumpstered.
Beyond those, I think Staff of Shadow Flame off Nefarian was the biggest one for me… but that might only be because I’m still super bitter that I had top caster dkp in two different guilds trying to get that damn thing to drop and it never did. But yeah, overall casters where way less dependent on weapons, so there wasn’t that same kind of iconic “omg he has XXXX” feeling when coming across one, barring perhaps, as Barogence above mentioned, if you saw an Atiesh.
Azuresong Mageblade was one of the first items to have +spellpower.
I never agreed with the principle that there was no need for legendary caster gear because casters weren’t as gear dependent. It wasn’t so much about the gear dependency but rather the prestige and the dream to wield that weapon, as impossible as it was to get.
At least priests and hunters had their own epics. f you were a mage, warlock, shaman or druid there were pretty much no iconic collectibles. Atiesh was introduced far too late in vanilla to be that relevant but at least that was something. Not so much luck for the others mentioned above.
Rogues had it tough too because they did have dependency on weapons but no way any guild was going to let a rogue have Thunderfury over a tank.
Loved that weapon. It was so nice to actually have a sword at your side instead of a wimpy dagger or a massive staff that was always attached to your back and never held except to whack mice.
Other notable caster items. Priest had the benediction/anathema staff. Staff of Dominance was also very prominent for mage/warlock. As mentioned above the azuresong mageblade was popular. There were several +spellpower daggers, none of which come to mind. I cant think of any maces for priests.
I realize that these are all epics and not legendary. The only legendary caster weapon is Atiesh and its definitely difficulty to get!
Inventor’s Focal Sword comes to mind.
There were many many guilds that gave thunderfury to rogues. Rogues just have to wait until a few tanks have it first.
Also, if you’re in a guild that is one of the better raiding guilds on your realm you can probably do MC partial pugs once your guild is geared enough. Take ~15 of your guildies and pug the rest. Reserve the bindings and BOOM! There’s your thunderfury on a rogue.
the robes of arugal are an iconic item for casters
people run SFK at levels as high as 27 in the hopes of getting those
Staff of Jordan. It’s what they modeled the heirloom staff on in later expansions. Pretty iconic.
