What happens if you switch character-specific bindings to global?

For a long time I used character-specific key bindings on most/all of my characters, but now with a stupidly large army of alts, I’ve seen the folly in that. I’ve normalized several of them to the same basic set of bindings, and am now wondering what the best way to get the rest on board is. The difficulty is that I don’t know what happens when I untick the box for character-specific bindings when I am logged into one.

Do the current characters bindings immediately update to the global bindings? Do they update on relog? Or, in the worst of all possible worlds, do the current characters bindings become the new global bindings?

Maybe the right way to do this is to just delete WTF/Account/{account}/{server}/{character}/bindings-cache.wtf on every character? Then they would all end up using WTF/{account}/bindings-cache.wtf by default, and I wouldn’t have to do anything with the character-specific check box in key bindings? It would automatically clear for all of them?

When you uncheck the box, the keybindings will immediately change to the global bindings. (After you accept the confirmation dialog box.) You’ll have to uncheck the box on each character to get them all on the global settings.

If you delete the character specific binding file, I believe it will just create a new file with the same character specific keybinds. So, that’s probably not the way to go.

You can, when fully exited from the game, copy the various keybinding files to other characters to get them using the same thing, but I wouldn’t recommend that. If you really want all your characters on the same keybinding system, you’ll want that box unchecked on all of them so they are using the global keybinds. Otherwise, even if you get them all on the same page keybinding wise, you’ll probably get “drift” where you decide to change something, and it becomes a massive pain to keep all of your characters consistent.
