What happened to WoW?

I recently resumed my sub after a long break for a chance to get into the beta. For the past week, I log on, check if I got beta, log into retail and just stare at my character screen. I have almost 30 characters at or near cap (only 3 above 330il) but I have zero interest in playing any of them. I created multiple level 1 characters, play them and then delete them.
I knew BFA was going to be a meh expansion (I created a forum before it launched about it) but there were a lot of people who disagreed with me. I figured Id give it a shot. First time since I started that I went that long without an active sub.
I don’t think I am the only one in this position. I am curious about other people’s theories on why WoW is in the state it is in now for so many people.
As for my own theory, WoW began its decline when they started focusing less on class design and more on spec design (the end of the old talent trees). What killed wow for me was the endless grind with no reward. Wow has always been a grind but the BFA “rewards” feel like im on a hamster wheel. Also, repgrinding for “new” races. GTFO with that crap.
What are your theories?

Forums still saying wow is dying as usual I see?

Everything comes easy, so the journey doesn’t matter.

Game is about the loot box at the end of the queue/time gate, the content that gets you it is irrelevant.

Youre looking at WoW 2 not WoW; WoW comes out in August.

I predict from now on it’s going to follow a pattern of Filler -> Decent content -> Filler -> Decent content from here on out as it did with WoD -> Legion -> BfA. It’ll dip, make a resurgence, dip, and come back again as all things do.

Edit 2: Disregard my quote from Edit 1

You got a lot of catching up to do.

I guess you skipped the “for me” part. I’m not the only one who feels this way but many feel opposite.

That’s fair.

But I also felt this way during WOD (legit thought my game was ruined forever). Luckily “for me” the game only got better.

It’s different for everyone. I’ve learned it’s far more enjoyable when you ignore what the masses think.

Meh, probably play classic/other games and just watch youtube to catch up tbh.

Interesting to see someone on the opposite side of the spectrum than myself when it comes to how much desire they have to play wow . Ive never played more than in bfa. And ive played since oct 2006. Before legion i was a casual that wuld hit max level and participate in questing primarily with a normal dung run here and there. In WoD i did my first ever heroic dungeon run and by the end i did LFR. Legion really got me in with raiding and mythic dungeon runs and i started dabbing into normal raiding and pvp. In BFA i play pretty much every facet od the game except pet battles and professions and i have more alts than i ever had before. I cant help but feel that adding QoL features (such as LFG, LFR, xmog, a straight forward pvp gearing system…) into wow it has motivated me to do old content, new content amd try different classes. Having a blast. I hope it changes for u.

Interesting. I also started playing in 06 a few months before TBC. Spent months just running ZF farming for the epic 2h. Most fun I had in the game tbh. The only QOL I enjoy is the xmog and the clock though. Thank you for your input.

If its usual for a forum page to say the game is dying then I think there would be something wrong if there are that many un-happy customers :open_mouth::open_mouth::open_mouth:

Depends on who you talk to.

If you have a solid group to do content with and enjoy challenging content (like me) then this expansion has you covered with M+ and Mythic raiding.

If your primarily a solo player who only really does WQ’s, Heroic Dungeons, Islands and Warfronts, and doesn’t have any social contacts that play it can fall off real hard.

Talk to anyone here and they might say the game has been dying since 2004.

Wow not yet dead. that being said they have a major problem going forward. With the relentless killing of horde heroes and leaders, there is a severe shortage of powerhouses. With sylvanas being written off. Horde does not have any powerhouses left. Not one left who could even fight a lesser alliance hero let alone a leader. They have pretty much-ended horde as we know it and ignored/alienated an entire player base.

Many say Thrall, but he lost his power. So who can stand up to alliance now? As it stands horde and sylvanas needed a ton of plot armor to go forward with this story. How is the next expansion going to be about?

Horde has been reduced to a none threat even before sylvanas death. Who going to pick up the slack? For better or worse there no going forward with the horde. There has not been any real build-up of pro horde heroes. The two they have are pro alliance and that not sitting well on my server. Besides lacking any real power. So what left for horde? I say this is the reason why so many hordes are leaving. There no future for the horde. That my personal opinion.

Baine, Suarfang, Lor’themar or Thrall. I know forums seem to like them. On my realm, they are pretty much despised. I wonder how they viewed on other servers? Most of my friends and from I read outside wow forums are very confused about what evil she has done. The dev says she has and forums have said she has. In a game not much. they even view the tree is not seen as an evil thing. Just part of war.

I’ve enjoyed BFA and am playing much more than usual. I have other hobbies that I need to get back into, but wow is sucking me in. I’m not in a rush and do what I feel like doing in wow. I don’t get pissed off over a wipe, because that’s a learning experience. I learned to have thick skin years ago, but really haven’t had stuff in game to piss me off lately besides a few impatient morons that start shouting, “Just lose - we can’t win now.” Kind of stuff in PVP.

I don’t care whether or not I got it, I haven’t even checked for it.

Why do you care about retail. Your first sentence says it all. You did not return for retail.

“Just lose we cant win now” attitude is a pretty sad one. Ppl start saying that for example in AB and its only 400 -200 for thr opposite faction. That can totally be turned around and how awesome is it when ot happens

Bro, this has been usual since 2005.

OP, I feel similar.

For me, I can best sum it up by saying that they removed too much challenge from the core of the game ( game world ) … saturated the game with too many mounts, toys, pets and other items, thus rendering any ones I earned on my own meaningless in feeling since they just got tossed onto the giant pile … and they try to move the game too fast now with catch up mechanics and gear pinata’'s hitting you in the head no matter where you turn.

In short, the game has more content than ever, but due to design decisions, I have less interest in consuming it than ever since they’ve made it all feel pointless. I no longer feel invested in my character’s progression or development.

My toon no longer feels like an asset that I add value to.
