What happened to Tinkerer?

BFA hinted heavily at a Tinkerer class with mechagnomes, mechagon, the whole thing between the gnome and goblin leaders mech battling, and of course the biggest hint…

Island Expedition Tinkerer team. The 3 gnomes that had unique abilities that fleshed out as an engineer with a healing, tank, and DPS spec.

A gnome/goblin only class would be a nice break from Elves, add another ranged DPS spec and tank spec, and would be a fantasy archetype that hasn’t been filled yet.

What happened??

They realized they can’t even balance their existing classes.

The name “Killing Machine” was taken by Frost DK’s.

And just how do you balance 36 specs against Raid, M+, PvP and World content?
There’s no way it can EVER be balanced, at least, not in any way that people will agree on.

Ain’t any easier when you waste years of development time balancing systems on top of the classes just to throw out the systems and start the balance process entirely over.

Theory and supposition from the forums isn’t Blizzard hinting anything. Making an island team that’s named after a cult classic movie isn’t a hint about classes, it’s a nerd joke.

 He made the point I was going for way more eloquently.

Pretty sure cameos in wow never had fleshed out abilities completely unique and in line with the possibility of a new class that has established lore and fit in.

Tinkerer class would be the only class that would make me reroll from my 2004 hunter.

And you figure they should add more classes/specs? Is that the solution?

Now that I’ve had time to really reflect on it…

I think BFA was introducing the community to Tinkers. We’ll probably start seeing more of them from now on. Perhaps it’s all preparation for adding them in 10.0? Maybe they really needed more time to truly invest into Tinker development, to make it awesome.

The fleshed out abilities are to summon a mechanical pet/mount and drop turrets and bombs. Something with NPC’s have been doing since Vanilla. The other 2 members of that team shoot you with a gun and run away, while one uses an engineering version of chain lightning.

Also, his cameo isn’t new to BFA, he’s been in the game since TBC.

Gnomes using machines as part of their fighting ability wasn’t introduced in BFA. Gnomeregan is a zone/instance full of gnomes that could be considered a Tinker class. It’s been there since the beginning.

I know we all want something new and fresh, WoW is getting more and more boring by the day. I even agree to the point that a tinker class using mechs to fill in the 3 roles would be kinda cool, but BFA wasn’t hinting at it. It was just a team of nerd jokes to make you say, “Hey, I recognize that reference” to distract you from the fact that island expeditions was another major failure from Blizzard.

Odd, I never once jumped to that conclusion. I think Tinker fans grasping at straws read too much into the situation.

blizzard realized it would be a bad class and scrapped the idea

It got time-gated by their own time gates. They blocked themselves out from doing content.

Tinkerer was never planned or existed. Npcs having “some” tinkerer abilites just meant that…enemies that were different. It would never work as a player class.

By that same logic, BFA “hinted” shadow hunter class but face it…it was never gonna be a thing because 2 different classes already possessed hunter/totem skills.
