I used to play during WotLK. I quit during Cata, and came back for BfA.
One of my new guildies was talking about changes to Wrath Gate - What happened? When WotLK was out, it was one of the most hype events. A great use of in-game cinematics and a genuinely powerful moment.
Apparently Sylvanas was now behind it? I thought the whole point was that she was undermined from within by Putress and her enslaved Dreadlord - I thought that was a really poignant moment for her. She had always been fairly arrogant and domineering, and I thought the idea that treachery could fester in her own ranks when she thought she had an iron grip was really interesting. When/why was this changed?
My belief is that she planned on using the new plague on the scourge. However Putress and Vari used it on the alliance / horde forces as well.
I doubt Sylvanas would want to risk her fragile alliance with the horde at that time. Considering that Thrall had the Korākron occupy the Undercity after reclaiming it until Garrosh recalled them to defend Orgrimmar in patch 5.4.
Sylvanas isnāt the smarted person in the world. From her own accounts she believes she slid into Frostmourne during the Third War.
I would say that if the Lich King had been killed in the attack, she would have launched phase 2 and attacked Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Having Putress act as her scapegoat would be her contingency plan that had to be enacted to keep her in power due to the plague failing to kill the Lich King.
But of course, that would have to mean she has some actual intelligence and tactics, and isnāt just stupidly blind to things happening right beneath her nose.
Maybe they changed it because that is when Fordragon died and there will be some revenge plot later on where the lich king goes after Sylvanas because of the Wrathgate. But If they do that it is stretching the story real thin.
āIāve heard these discussions on the internet about āsheās going off the railsā, but is she? Iāve been writing Sylvanas personally since 2006, and this is pretty much - the Wrathgate and the Blight and the Forsaken - in character. Those were all under Sylvanasā orders. What weāre seeing now is an escalation of the plans Sylvanas has, clearly, and weāre in the middle of that.ā -Alex Afrasiabi
Thatās the quote from the article/interview from last fall. I donāt know how you can interpret that any other way than Sylvanas knew and planned the wrathgate.
See . . . See . . . what happened was that Putress and Vari wanted to prank the Alliance and Horde with barrels with Fart Gas. A prank that gone wrong.
Itās called a āretconā. Itās what bad writers do when theyāve written themselves into a corner. Also, giving Sylvannas WAY too much credit in this whole scenario. Sheās playing 4D chess, hoping to kill the Lich King, the horde and the alliance with new plague⦠but she kills herself after the Lich King dies? Ok.
She committed suicide after Arthas was confirmed deceased.
Would someone who did that have this master plan to wipe out the alliance and horde after their main enemy was killed? Of course not.
That is one reason why I believe she only planned on using it against the scourge. Putress and Vari hijacked the plan and used it on the alliance / horde forces as well because burning legion.
Iām personally behind the idea the Sylvanas was behind the idea of the bombing. At THAT point in time she didnāt actually give a **** about the horde, or even her own forsaken. She planned to kill Arthas then and there, it was all she wanted in her afterlife. Which is proven by the fact that she kills herself once he dies. It was only AFTER she did that did she start to panic about immortality and such.
The funny thing is, the one who was behind a lot of Sylvanas writing now (even though he is no longer on the wow team), was the guy who wrote her short story.
