We were briefly able to see a mail icon next to our character’s name at the character selection screen, displaying who we had mail from. What happened to that feature? That was actually so helpful!

I think it put a lot of strain on the servers, not realizing the size of the player base and their army of alts.
Maybe it will be added to the Store.

Ah, that’s a shame if so! That was a very convenient feature.
We honestly have no idea. I guess we wait and see if it returns upon expansion launch.

It happened only slightly more than the “you can mog individual shoulders!” effect that we were to get.

Oh good, I thought I was imagining things - it was there and then it wasn’t. At least now I know it was there for a brief period of time.
If I had to guess, they are rolling back individual little upgrades like this to see if one or more of them are triggering other issues.

It is convenient to have, but I use the AH extensively on virtually every alt I have, so it’s not whether I have any mail, but how much I have.

As far as I had seen it only showed mail that you had sent from your own account (so stuff from an alt).

It was useful, so they removed it. If it is useful, or fun, it gets removed/nerfed. I thought this was common knowledge at this point.

That certainly makes sense! 
I can understand where you’re coming from. I don’t remember if it displayed “Auction House” if you hovered over the icon or not? It was such a short lived feature, that I really just can’t remember. 
Check out the addon “Postal” if you are being serious, it’s amazing for in-game mail purposes.
