What happened to the gritty dark fantasy we once had?

Why is it that the writing team cant write interesting characters anymore? other than Daddy Denathrius, that is (I could listen to him talk all day)

Everyone’s gone soft, Garrosh and Varian are dead, Sylvannas is “good” now so they couldnt kill her off. (Wtf is with that anyway? that indecisive cow burned thousands of night elves to death for no reason and somehow she gets redemption because Uther says so? screw that. tear her apart and put her head atop stormwind like we did for Deathwing…)

And why cant we just have evil characters without a secondary agenda? It always seems to be “Yes i was bad, but i was just trying to save you from… to save you from… Dies”.

It hasn’t been good since Legion! BFA ruined Jaina and N’zoth. Shadowlands ruined Arthas and Sylvannas. The Jailer was born ruined. Dragonflight was good, if you’re into scalies and have no taste.

TLDR; it sucks.
Edit: When we faced the scourge. Undead, death, slavery, corpses everywhere and melting flesh. I would argue that then was the gritty dark fantasy era.

You guys keep saying “this isnt warhammer”. But warhammer isn’t the standard for dark fantasy. It is a pillar of it.

Then quit.

Warcraft was never a grimdark franchise. You’re thinking of Warhammer.

It’s very hard to write an evil character who is just evil for the sake of it without them coming off as boring and one dimensional. Making a character more complex at least makes them a little interesting.

Sounds like nostalgia talking. Legion’s story wasn’t good either. I liked DF’s myself but WoW has never been about having a “deep” story up til TWW.

So we’re gonna ignore all the war crimes and the wrathgate then?

Nah I’m just gonna ignore you.

“WoW” and “gritty dark fantasy” do not go in the same sentence. Never have.

Legion is really the last legitimate threat we face. Sargeras is outright a Titan and we faced THE BURNING LEGION, a literally unending and immortal army of Demons who can just grow their ranks endlessly by cycling back dead Demons through Argus.

That was the end of any GOOD established threats we had, because we’d already killed off the 3 strongest Old gods collectively between Vanilla, WotLK, and MoP. Heck the first raid boss we face is C’THUN, the third most powerful Old god who even regenerating was probably only slightly weaker than N’zoth.

When could World of Warcraft ever be described as “gritty dark fantasy”? This isn’t Warhammer.

And the lines! “I AM MY SCARS!” oof chills!

WoW has always run the gamut of serious to silly. Pop culture references, poop quests… literally anything that involves Gnomes and Goblins… WoW has had lots of silliness since Day 1. Even the RTS had its silly moments. Does no one remember the silly lines units would say if you repeatedly clicked on them?

why is it that so many people who play this game can’t imagine anything being interesting unless it’s gritty and dark?

And yet here we are being told to take the reject they shoved into a dagger seriously. :stuck_out_tongue:

Xal’atath got the school locker treatment from the bullies we already beat but this is what we got.

People must’ve slept through WotLK through BFA to think WoW was never a dark franchise.
