It was abused. It was removed.
A.k.a. it was fun, intuitive, and made the experience more enjoyable… so it got disabled

John Hight gave an answer best described as “probably, but.” After discussing the reasons why it was removed in the first place — it wasn’t getting much use, it was extremely vulnerable to exploits via automation

The old forums are gone now, but someone kindly snapshotted former CM Ythisens response about why.
The Web/Mobile Auction had a lot more issues with keeping it up than it was really worth for the small amount of players that actually used it. Trying to tackle and fix those issues (for transparency the majority were just exploits) just takes dev time away from working on new content. While it may change in the future, we currently at this time aren’t planning to bring this back.

Well it was a poorly written API and people were actively exploiting it to get around the 200 item per day listing limit. These exploits were causing server stability issues. Instead of fixing the problem in the API, they removed the functionality completely.
I mean you can’t expect a multi billion dollar company that wants to shift to mobile to properly code a mobile app can you?
