What happened to realm pop?

Talking about the website, realmpop com
It showed charts and numbers on factions, races and classes played per realm. It’s been down for ~ a week.
I wonder if they got a cease and desist or something.

Wouldn’t surprise me… Lul

Well blizz shut down the API they used (remote auction house), they’d have to actually crawl armory and that’s very difficult to do organically.

Is this part of their grand scheme to normalize the AH? I really don’t like how they’re micro managing every aspect of the game.

There are threads elsewhere but short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: it was also being used for less legitimate reasons and boting for gold farming.

That is dissappointing I enjoyed fooling around on there in my down time.

I hope that blizzard comes up with their own tracker or tracking system so we can see those stats. I doubt they will, but I can hope.

Blizzard removed certain endpoints from the API, so a lot of developers are currently reworking their projects or creating workarounds for it.

It was always highly inaccurate anyway as it relied on people using the AH. So if someone did almost all their AH interaction via a bank toon it would skew numbers.

1% accurate is still better than nothing though :man_shrugging:.

Why would anyone level a bank alt to 120?

Yeah Blizz has worked hard to make it difficult to get accurate gauges of active players and accounts. That’s not really surprising.

They wouldn’t that’s the issue, they may also not keep the bank alt. But they were still ‘counted’. More to the point the 120 might not have been. Skewing numbers the wrong way.

I’m not following, so when you filtered for it to show level 120 players it wasn’t showing just those?
Curious about your logic behind that.

It was, but if the 120 never used the AH then the data was off. Remember the data only showed characters that used the AH. If someone only interacted on a level 1 bank toon then the bank toon and not the 120 would be counted. Thus making the 120 numbers look skewed against a particular faction or group.

They would never share that data. Would be fascinating though.

Could be part of this ?

DEADLINE:

The process to bring all of Blizzard’s consumers of data into compliance begins October 1st , 2019. We will begin to enforce the data protection policy on January 2nd, 2020. If you haven’t taken all the steps to become compliant, you will receive an error when you attempt to call a Blizzard API endpoint.

I’m 99.9% positive it recorded data of all members of a guild that any member used to AH on. It didn’t only record characters who used the AH, a character who didn’t use the AH only had to be in a guild with someone else who used the AH.

The website never claimed to record only active characters, it even had a statement on the front page about that.

From an archived copy of the site:

How - To get the list of characters for a realm, first we record all the characters who posted to the auction house. Then we fetch and record their guild rosters. This should cover the majority of characters on a realm. To avoid getting listed, a character must never post to the auction house, and never belong to a guild where a guild member posts to the auction house.

So it would still be possible to not get caught in their data gathering, but less likely.

Possible, but it also assumes the data was right in the first place (e.g. the data shown in the view from the API). It also assumes characters are active, which is again… not shown via any API as far as I’m aware. So unless it detected garbled names (obvious non-logins) you really couldn’t say with great certainty the toons were active or not. Again there are so many places for skew it is not even funny. Then there are issues of “How to determine mains” and other questions that analysis would need to provide. The only people that honestly have any of this data with any sort of accuracy or precision is Blizz, and they have made it very clear they don’t intend to share.

Heh, I did not know this I have like 9 toons but only this one and an other one uses the AH. The rest sends stuff through my gbank or mail for me to do transactions on the AH. I like having all my money one one toon to keep track of my riches.

So the site never tracked my other 7 toons since they never interacted with the AH?
