It is terrible.
Mediocre design and bad tuning.
Blizz is planning on making it unplayable so they can turn it into a melee spec!
The spec being based around Aimed shot is a probem.
Hard casting aimed shot for the lion’s share of your damage sucks. The spec is designed such that you have to get EVERY aimed shot you can possibly get off, or your DPS is in the dumpster. The problem with that is that the cast time is so long, that even if you’re midway through the cast, when a mechanic spawns under you, you need to move and stop the cast.
Look at the dragon soul MM spec. You cast Chimera shot on CD, and then you did two rotations of a focus cost shot and two steady shots for focus gen while you waited for Chimera to come back up. If you could stand still, you cast Aimed shot to spend. If you had to move you cast arcane. Aimed WAS better, but not so much better that your DPS suffered really hard when you had to cast arcane. Chimera was your big deal. add to that your free cast Aimed shots from LnL and you had a rewarding experience.
Now, every missed aimed shot is crippling, and the devs are trying to balance the DPS around “how hard does this shot have to hit, given they have to cancel its cast one in four attempts”. It’s awful.
A more recent example of thiis dynamic was marked shot in legion. MArked shot was your DPS anchor, and aimed and arcane filled. It took till antorus for everything to fall into place and the rotation loop to feel “right” but that rotation felt great.
Everything since the BFA rework has just felt terrible.
Marksmanship feels fine and only gets better in Dragonflight, if you wish to move and cast more BM is built completely around that playstyle. Both specs play very different now which feels great. It allows players to choose which playstyle they prefer. Properly casting aimed shots at the correct time as to not have to move and interrupt it feels rewarding, and if you do need to move you have arcane shot, steady shot or rapid fire.
I wouldn’t be against adding talents to cater to players that enjoy older styles of marksman but in the end most of the hunter playerbase will just choose whichever one sims better rather than what playstyle they enjoy more.
How is it rewarding when you have war, dh, rogue, ww, dk, riding you only because they know they will reduce your damage output by 75%. Yes I calculated lately, if the MM hunter is being targeted the damage output dropped by 75%.
Also I have noticed that casters are aware of that, and they can simply los a 2+ second cast making the hunter unable to get 100% in.
Against melee teams is trully tough.
Against casters team is better but still requires the hunter to be top notch.
I am 3x glad over the past 15 years so I consider my player versus player skills superior. But when the class is broke superior skills don’t help that much.
Oh man i miss that dragon soul spec. That was one of the best moments i had as MM.
And that saddens me.
MM does not feel fine and aimshot is never rewarding, since it’s slow and hits like a wet noodle. The remaining talents do nothing to make it feel better either. Steady has a mandatory point in the talent tree, to give back giving focus, which should of never been removed.
Steady damage has always been a joke, but it was at least a good focus builder. Rapid fire is still bugged after all this time, any slight LoS issue and it stops, yet the animation keeps going.
They still designed MM around trueshot, and it’s garbage outside of that little window. Even during trueshot it’s not fun, just faster, so it feels slightly better.
Where are new skills, maybe head shot, lung shot, give multi the ability to place hunters mark triggering marked shot, just no vulnerability this time. Hell where are flaming arrows, incendary shot, anything but the garbage we got. So many ideas they could of done…
