What Happened to Legendary Quests?

The Evoker and Fyr’alath legendary quests have both been major disappointments. I hope this isn’t the direction that Blizzard is taking for War Within. Nothing about these quests felt “Legendary”. It was a bunch of repetitive time and money sinks. I felt like I was either standing around waiting for the Superbloom to start, or standing around waiting for some item to come off cooldown. How would it have detracted from the quest in any way if you only had to survive attuning with the grip once instead of ten times? What about attuning the vellum twenty times feels any more “legendary” than doing it once? How does requiring over 250k (more originally) worth of crafting materials for recipes you can make yourself at rank 1 add any sense of this being a grand quest?

Frankly, I would have rather just paid a vendor 300k gold + the legendary drop off Fyrakk and called it a day. Legendary quests have always cost some amount of money but before this expansion it largely came from static priced items off a vendor, and players weren’t price-gouged by the economy because other players knew they’d probably pay it.

I hope War Within has legendary quests that actually feel like quests. I’d be fine spending 10 hours attaining a legendary item as long as those 10 hours are in dungeons, raids, scenarios, follower instances, etc. Anything other than what Dragonflight gave us.

I didn’t do it for the gold sink alone.

Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker you had to buy Enchanted Elementium Bar off the AH or have it crafted
Sulfuron Hammer had to be bought off the AH or crafted to make the legendary version
shadowmourne [Primordial Saronite] can be gotten of ah or boss kills

Those were a bit different because guilds would select who got the item and (in my experience) would help the person fund it, or use in-guild crafters to make things for free. There were also far fewer people working on legendaries at the time.

The MoP cloak and WoD ring were the first legendaries that were really accessible to all players, and they weren’t nearly as expensive to achieve. They took some time, but it was also through a lot of quests and events that felt more relevant than this round. The fact that the fastest way to do the vellum for Fyr’alath is to sit in proving ground and reset cooldowns until you get the least expensive awakened element is just a really telling example of how bad the legendary quests are this expansion.

That’s what happens when you make them soloable, they just aren’t as epic.
