What GPU should I get?

My Gtx 1070 is failing, so I’m looking to get a new graphics card to replace it. Any recommendations please? I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options. My CPU is an i7-6700k while I have 16gb of RAM.

I currently play on an 1440p 120hz monitor, and ideally I would like a graphics card that can do 8/10 or better. I do play Civ 6 from time to time as well, so a card that would do decently on that game would be ideal too.

You did not state your budget so I picked a card with better performance then your 1070.

RTX 2060 Super would be a good choice retails for about $399 to $499 usd depending on the brand and seller. Newegg and Amazon should have some in stock.

Radeon 5700 will get you 2060 super performance for $350 and less power consumption.

Next step up would be a 2070 super for about $600 or 5700xt for $500.

2060 super is like a 2070 (non super) and that was (nearly) like a 1080.

but atm (afaik) there are only foudner versions and they have blower style cooling…that is NEVER a good idea.

reason multifan cooling is as common as it is.

and you lose out on 2000 series benefits which DO have some uses inside and outside of gaming.

(both are good cards still)

The 5700 should be fine, a 5700xt with OC might be a problem for the blowers.

Raytracing through RTX cards really hasn’t panned out very well. DLSS was promising but it turned out to be a doozy. The 5700 image quality is day and night better than RTX cards.

Here’s hardware unboxed on Radeon Image Sharpening (left) vs Nvidia’s DLSS (right):

RTX cards overall are great but just overpriced.

yes but its still there and it is still developing.

again still progressing and getting better (recently mentioned a 50% increase in MHW with it on higher end machines)

well yeah…dlss isnt supposed to be for detail. hence why you get betetr performance with it on than off.

welcome to Nvidia.

the low end is still not bad as it does get you performance on par with what u pay and opens way for future stuff that uses tensor cores, RT cores, etc.

I am entirely agaisnt RT (as a gamer I want performance) but it has its uses.

Minecraft and 20 year old games is not a good sign. Raytracing will do well, not with the current hardware. Intel had a better approach but were too early.

It might get better, not there yet. So far the feature has been a failure.

DLSS has to be optimized for a title and still decreases image quality. The 5700 doesn’t require specific optimizations and increases image quality.

AMD and Nvidia are trying to sell us their failed workstation cards. IMO The GTX 1660 TI is a great card because it’s missing the unneeded cores of RTX cards. The added core have cause larger than normal failures on RTX cards (we’ve had about 1 failure a month vs our 0 failures on our 1080 TI cluster).

Quake ?

Minecraft does look great with it (cant deny how much different it looks)

Even some “gray area” in emulation have used it to make them much betetr visually.

depends on the end user.

Some ppl swear by it (as it can give you edge in games as shown when you can see with reflections in BF5).

yes, atm it does have a big impact, but its still plenty usable.

you are comparing 2 different things…

DSLL doesnt “improve” quality. It attempts to increase your performance while not impacting quality THAT much.

AMD’s sharpening increase quality w/o impacting performance much.

again. failure or not is end user (as everyone is different).

I DO agree that the RTX line shouldnt of been the Main line (as gamers want raw power not gimmicks) and should of had a gaming one and an offshoot of RTX that benefit ppl who do more than just game.

However if you were a college student who doing ANY kind of modeling, creation, etc RTX line is perfect for them as they do get a benefit of those tensor cores.

For sure and the demos I’ve seen are of a single room. When you go outside it turns into a slide show. I’m all for tech but it’s gotta be usable.

It’s been gimped down to the point where rasterization and raytracing quality is indistinguishable in BF5. At higher quality the game looked better but was unplayable.

They’re both trying to solve similar issues: better performance without having to perform the raw processing of a native resolution. DLSS is great in theory but it hasn’t panned out well.

AMD and Nvidia took the manufactured failed (not engineering or sales failed) and sold them to gamers. Why should we have to pay for hardware with limited or no value to us. If you’re modeling or using AI both the cards are great. IMO Nvidia is better mainly due to better support if being used as a workstation card.

Buy the best card you can afford

Playing on MSI 1660 gaming X for the last 2 months,
graphics are awesome and running over 60 fps all over the game even at a 4K resolution

The RTX 2060 or RTX 2060 super will run WoW with no issues at all … the only reason to go above that is for other games! or 4k
