What got you into Roleplaying?

I did a lot of text and writing based role-playing back in the days, but I’ve never gotten into it in WoW. But I do play my characters with some headcanon and even behavioural changes. Like, if I play this paladin, I actively try to help people. But if I’m playing my rogue, I’m behaving a bit sneaky and backstabby. That sometimes even spills into how I chat as them.

But I’ve never gotten into full RP mode with fully written back stories and RP add-ons etc. But I definitely treat my characters as something much more than just loadouts of skills, that’s for sure.

  1. My wife.
  2. We started the game as roleplayers. Both of us have played roleplaying games since the 1980s.
  3. A hunter on the Thorium Brotherhood server. It is still there but hasn’t been played in a long time. Next was a druid which has moved servers multiple times and is currently Alliance on Wyrmrest Accord.
  4. Not so much anymore. My wife no longer plays and she was the social butterfly out there meeting new people all the time.

Blood Elf Paladin. Started playing in late vanilla on a Night Elf Hunter but hadn’t started RPing on there

Once in a great while yes

real og’s remember town square channel in wc3/sc chatrooms

Being introduced to D&D at a young age. And the avalanche of TTRPGs that followed.

When I was a kid, my cousin and I were so baffled by a youtube video we found of Goldshire on Moon Guard that we decided to check it out together. It was even worse than the video showed. But we decided to explore Stormwind after that and discovered plenty of people doing just normal RP. She and I didn’t know that was a thing, but when we discovered it was, we immediately rerolled on MG and never looked back.

That was mid Cataclysm iirc, so I guess about 14 years ago now. Time flies.

Ironically… a blood elf hunter. Not this character, a different one. She was your stereotypical 12-year-old’s cringey self-insert-half-nether-dragon-related-to-a-Windrunner character. Yeah.

I don’t think I stuck with her for more than a year max, maybe not even. Thankfully, she is very gone now! Completely scrapped. I alt hopped a lot after that, mostly preferring Alliance side, till early 2017, when I decided on a whim to make… another blood elf hunter. Returning to my roots, I guess.

Anyway, this one was a lot less cringe and a lot more normal—a perfectly average Farstrider who practices nature magic! Inspired by the Windrunners for sure, but definitely not related to one this time LOL. She remains my main character to this day. Though as you can see, I use the void elf model so that I can RP with Alliance folks, since like 90% of my server’s population is Alliance. Also because I think this hairstyle is more accurate to her actual appearance than anything available for belves. :]

Yes! It’s the only reason I play this game at all. If it weren’t for RP, I would have quit several expansions ago.

Although nowadays, I limit myself to RP with people I know and trust. Back in the day, I would have spent my time wandering around popular RP hubs and walking up to strangers on the street. But I have enough of a social network now on this game that I don’t need to rely on random walk-up RP; I can turn to my friends and trusted peers for more carefully crafted story-driven RP. The only time I typically engage with strangers these days is at server-wide events, like war campaigns or market festivals, etc.

I was already in my 20s then

Always RPd a bit. Got into it a lot more in SL because I was bored.

Not in WoW.

Can’t really point to what, specifically, got me into RP’ing. When I first started WoW back in TBC, friends and I rolled on a PVP server and mainly just PVP’d and some Raiding. It wasn’t until Cata, when most of my friends quit playing and the guild disbanded, that I moved to an RP server and tried out RP’ing.

I think the first character that I really got into RP’ing was a Goblin. Really got into the whole cheap merchant stereotype, always trying to sell something. The RP guild I was in held a big tournament one time and I would jump in between matches to try and sell drinks and stuff to the crowd.

HM Tauren women

I want to get into roleplaying someday, someday.
That can be misconstrued, but I still stand by it.

IN Vanilla everybody was required to have a website , with a back story , for your character in each rp guild, ( and they made us have Ventrillo also)
So I went on the Retakers guild website and made a back story for my druid ( do not remember what I wrote , It was 18 years ago)

So now that that isn’t specifically required on my server anymore, I try to mentally remember back stories for most of my characters , if anybody asks again.
My favorite is my Tauren Moocipher who was cast out of Thunder Bluff for eating Hamburgers.

1.) Carried over from AoL Roleplay in the Red Dragon Inne / Rhydin (double points if you know of it).
2. 30+ years now.
3. Predated WoW. FFVII / Midgar Roleplay. I used to be close with a guy named Shinrareno. Hope your still kicking out there mate. Super secret Yellow Submarine for life. Travixus needs a new life through a new — afaik though.
4. Yes.
5. Bud of Mana. Bud was and remains… …uh… very messed up. Lol.

Lol…I used to do it in real life. Guys and gals we would and fantasy stuff, never sci fi. Cuz I grew up in the mountains so it was much easier to do so out there.

I’m not sure how I got started roleplaying in general; it’s something I’ve done as long as I can remember.

Single-player PC RPGs were definitely part of it. I played a lot of the Exile games growing up. My first “modern” RPG was Knights of the Old Republic. Even in other games though, I was always conscious of the role I was taking on - like a general in strategy games or whatever - and tried to play in a way that made sense for that role.

My first public roleplaying experience were the “open RPG”-style custom maps in Starcraft (the original) and Warcraft 3, which were basically sandbox maps where you could spawn whatever you wanted and tell a story together.

Ultimately by the time I started playing WoW, it wasn’t a question of “why would I roleplay” but “why wouldn’t I”. It was just part of how I interacted with games.

Since vanilla, although I didn’t start seriously developing a character and taking part in long-term storylines until Burning Crusade.

Fortuna here was my first permanent roleplaying character, who I made in Burning Crusade as a blood elf mage. Obviously the big inflection point in her character was that I killed her off in Wrath to make a death knight.

The server I was on started to die off around Cata, so I made a new character on Moon Guard, a human hunter. She’s been my main pretty much ever since.

I do! I tend to have stretches where I’m heavily into roleplaying and stretches where I don’t; right now, it’s on, but I skipped most of Dragonflight and Shadowlands (and a big chunk of BfA).

You mean you’re not really a big red bikini demon who hates demon hunters? :dracthyr_cry_animated: My day is ruined.

I don’t really roleplay with other people in WoW. But when I’m playing story stuff alone I like to pretend to be Rosenivy a little. It’s fun to pretend to be some arrogant / confident spell caster for a few minutes.
