The only movies worth watching for me in 2022 were Secrets of Dumbledoore, and then had to wait for Avatar 2 Way of the Water, and Puss in Boots The Last Wish at the very end.
This is a âlive actionâ CGI remake that got a lot of flack for using someone other than a white skinned red head. Disney has come out with several other live looking CGI remakes like this and I havenât particularly liked them. Just a personal preference as they tend to lose the charm of the original animations.
As far as movies for 2023 go. Here are a few Iâm interested in.
People feel that Disney is pandering and I kind of see their point.
Bell was kept the same. Aladdin and Jasmine were kept the same. If weâre going to ârandomlyâ switch races, why not make Mulan African American? Doesnât make sense to the story because Mulan is set in China. Well, The Little Mermaid was written by a Danish guy. The switch is making people scratch their heads.
Plus, why canât they just create stories and write the lead for an AA? I think itâs extremely lazy.
But theyâre not changing the setting of the movie. Itâs still 1800s Danish royalty. An AA girl walking down the streets of some town in Denmark would have people turning heads and not Disney reasons.
Also, why canât they write a story about an African princess? Or an Australian aborigine? Is Disney so bankrupt in the imagination department that they canât come up with a new story? If I was African American, I think I would enjoy a story loosely based on my people/ancestors more over some country that had nothing to do with anything.
But when it comes down to it, itâs all âwhatevs.â I really donât care in the grand scheme of things because I stopped watching Disney movies in 2018. The only point Iâm making is I understand the argument some people are making.
Almost everyone in the movie sounds American, with the exception of the lobster who sounds Jamaican. Most of it takes place in the ocean and Ariel was never said to be âDanish royaltyâ likeâŚanywhere? I mean the movie has already taken a LOT of liberties anyway, so I donât see why they canât continue. Like the original story was Ariel and Eric do not fall in love and get married, he marries someone else and she contemplates murdering him but decides to off herself instead. No one was upset about that change but oh man change it from a white girl to literally anything else? Time to get up in arms about it.
Yeah I get that people donât like change or w/e and I understand (but do not agree with) the argument just fine, I just think itâs a really silly thing for people to get upset about. Itâs a kidsâ movie and I really, really doubt any kids are going to care what race Ariel appears to be.
I didnât say that either but what prince did you think Andersen was writing about in the 1800s? Ariel was obviously hanging around the Danish royalty in the scenes on land.
That really, really depends. Did they watch the other three movies?
Did they see the play?
Did they watch the series on Disney+?
Did they play the game?
Did they go to the âUnder the Seaâ attraction in Magic Kingdom?
And now theyâre going to watch a movie where Ariel doesnât look like Ariel at all? You know, people were upset when Tom Cruise played Jack Reacher and itâs not because they were raciest. Itâs because Jack Reacher is like 6â4 and 250lbs. Tom Cruise is probably a buck 70 and 5â4. It goes the other way too. People were upset that Lucy and Motoko was played by a white woman (the same white woman, funny enough) and I donât think they were upset because âi hAte wHiTe pEoPlE!â
People donât like it when their favorite character doesnât look like their favorite character and that doesnât make them raciest. Disney is the one that has been telling the world for 30 years that Ariel is white with red hair.
I completely hear you. So this is just an honest opinion, but i think the reason Disney/big outfits choose to not do that is because they believe those things wouldnât make $$$$.
Which everyone hated what Disney is doing. Splash Mountain is a classic ride.
I doubt it, ride take place after Princess and the Frog so we not see that.
I love everyone had Ignore that the Flash movie is coming up as well. I think that film will end up flopping because DCEU is getting reset and Ezra Miller is rumored to be staying in resetâŚthat is going to anger lot of fans.
On the chance folks are interested in a very enjoyable âculturalâ movie check out Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Itâs set in NZ (written and directed by a New Zealander, based on a book by a New Zealander) and isnât shy about poking at its own entangled culture but in a feel-good, not-preachy way (at least IMO). Stars G.O.A.T. Sam Neill.
