What expansion has been the best version of each mage spec?

As I remember:

  • Arcane = Legion
  • Fire = Legion
  • Frost = Cataclysm

What is your opinion?

Arcane definitely Legion and before that Wrath. Fire was absolutely ridiculous towards the end of BfA when the corruptions were allowed to run amok. Frost has had its moments every now and again throughout several expansions but that has never really lasted all the way through an expansion, sadly.

I didn’t touch Arcane much, and it was bland in Cata. I did love it in WoD though, specifically BrF because of the 2/4pc and not having to run RoP. Also during HfC with that borked trinket…

Fire was a lot of fun in Legion for AoE. Even though LB wasn’t a thing anymore, that was offset by having one of the best spells in the game - cinderstorm. I don’t care how crap it was. Aim-based, curved stream of fire that would occasionally just pull extra packs (through walls/floors in BRH)… Wrath Fire is also a lot of fun.

Frost despite also being amazing for MoP, WoD and Legion. You had so many cool things like FFB, Frost Bomb, CmS, EB, GS, Blizzard ST, Water Jet. Ok, so PC sucked it was so weak for Frost you didn’t need it, and even better you didn’t take RoP.

Haha yeah fire was crazy with corruptions. Not just in raids. Stacking haste corruptions for sub 2 second gpy was great fun in bgs. With the flame cannon talent you could really reach out and fill the bg with them.

Cant wait for classic BFA.

TBC/Wrath Frost/arcane Fire/arcane. Being able to get the best of multiple specs was sooo much fun. Made for some interesting builds and a large variety of viable choice. You could join a raid or BG and see mages doing well with completely different talents from one and other.

You are forgetting vanilla/tbc/wrath frost was awesome in all but mainly vanilla and tbc. That’s why I am still playing mage and the only reason I post in the forums. I remember how much fun mage used to be.

BC was by far the best pvp

Man, those were the days. I used to make videos of me world pvping. I still have one somewhere of me 5v1 a party of new level 60s in BlackRock Mountain. Pvp back then was so fun man.

I had fun with cinderstorm, and love the aim basics, but i’m not really nostalgic because of how spells like that behave on cliffs (btw same problem with all pathfinding spells like frozen orb and blink)

However if that kind of mechanic was enhanced greatly (basically reworked to be physics based), could be fun to see it returns in a way.

Lb was very strong (probably OP) in Legion and in one part of BFA. LB is a real miss, for me it’s an iconic spell and i think it should probably be baseline.

In Legion also, RoP was not as mad as now, letting us deal decent damage out of it, which probably allowed to feel more fun. and inate power.

Bouncing Phoenix was Brrrrrr, they didn’t add this stupid “don’t use your spells and win stats” thing yet.

You know, I hated it at the time, but if I could rewind mage to any point in WoW’s history, it would be MoP.

As a shameless and unabashed Frost player, it was probably one of the two times the spec was actually designed really well with the other time being Legion. However, MoP was the last time I had access to Deep Freeze and Legion was when the mind virus took hold and they traded Frostfire Bolt for stupid snowballs. I can never forgive those two grave sins inflicted upon Frost.

I mean, MoP was the true multi-school spell expansion that the DF talent tree tried and failed to emulate. You could be a Frost mage with Living Bomb or Nether Tempest. True, it was the expansion where the horrible blight known as Rune of Power first emerged from the pits, but it was at least somewhat balanced by Invocation and Incanter’s Ward.

If I could have a class tree similar to the MoP talents with Deep Freeze and Frostfire Bolt while keeping the Legion-era CDs like Comet Storm and Glacial Spike I think that would be the perfect version of Frost.

Frost = mop

Mop/Wod for Fire and frost pvp

Legion/Dragonflight for Arcane pvp

Frost - MOP (loved the haste stack from bomb gameplay, and the old frozen orb animation)

Fire - WoD(only xpack I played fire so probably wrong)

Arcane - Legion(by far the most fun I’ve had as a mage aside from MOP Frost)

You know there was a time really early in, I think it was around the time they first launched Naxx…when they made shatter work with everything and you could legit run an elemental cross spec. That was some i of the most fun I had with my mage.

TBC Arcane by far for me. I didn’t play Mage much after that as I went Spriest until Legion and then quit the game until classic TBC. I don’t think many people who played Mage in the original TBC knew what a powerhouse Arcane was but it was figured out in classic. Arcane took a big dump in Wrath so I started playing retail again and it has taken an even bigger dump. God what have they done. I had 2 choices coming back to retail…My Spriest or Mage and I obviously picked the wrong one. Spriest is a clunky mess as well but at least it does big damage and doesn’t have to stand in or closely around a stupid circle.

I personally loved how WoD was.

Blackrock Foundry you used arcane/fire (depending on the fight)
Hellfire Citadel you used arcane/frost (depending on the fight).

I agree about Legion also for arcane. I love arcane and has sucked in plenty of expansions but loved it in Legion. This expansion, I wasn’t a fan of it even though it started out of the gate rocking. I just think Arcane needs a full overhaul.

Any that didn’t involve rune of power
