What exactly does mastery do?

I’m trying to figure out exactly what Mastery does. I know what crit does, I know what Haste does, but Mastery seems a bit vague. Here is what wowpedia says:

“Each Mastery offers specific benefits which can vary but generally fall into one of three categories: increasing the effectiveness of specific abilities or types of damage dealt; becoming more effective when certain conditions are met; or providing bonus effects including DoTs, HoTs, free attacks, or free spellcasts.”

So does that mean Mastery increases your Hit rating? Or does it increase attack/spell power? I can’t understand it.

There should be a passive spell in your spellbook that explains your spec’s mastery

Did you try hovering over the mastery stat in your stat page?

Ya what he said,

Mastery does something different for every class / spec

For example, Mastery increases a Marksmen Hunters attack range, for Sub Rogues the damage of combo-point spending finishers is increased, etc

Like for example. You are posting on a BM hunter so mastery increases the damage of your pets.

For this character. I’m a demo warlock so mastery increases the damage of my summons.

So it’s just a shortcut stat that they can use for balance then? Nothing more.

In game you can place your cursor on your mastery stats and see what it does.

Monkey explanation:

Ook ook, Mastery does different things for different classes, >eats banana<

LOL what? no, not even remotely close.

Goofy stat that does something different for every spec. It’s lazy rpg design but what can you do

It’s sad that you play a DK when this Hunter looks so good. White Wolf with an eyepatch…I’d fight along side you.
