What exactly am I doing wrong with my hunter and pumping out damage?

Good morning everyone. I’m pretty new to WoW and been playing for a little less than 2 months now. Whenever we do dungeons I’m always usually on the bottom when it comes to damage being dealt with the group. My guild members don’t really know much about the hunter spec (beast master) all that much so I figured I’ll take a shot with the community here.

What spells / abilities cast and talents do I need to change up? Sorry if this was been posted many times. Thank you.

Hmmm, well there are a lot of things. I would recommend reading the Icy Veins guide on BM Hunter. I will only mention the main things here. https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/beast-mastery-hunter-pve-dps-guide

As far as rotation, it’s really easy. In dungeons you will be mostly cleaving, and cleave damage comes from Beast Cleave. Multishot every 4 seconds to keep it up at all times, and maintain 3 stacks of Frenzy With Barbed Shot. It’s better to hit extra Multishots than to let Beast Cleave drop. If you’re hitting only 1 target then just try to get as many Kill Commands as possible while also maintaining 3 stacks of Frenzy.

I’m more worried about your gear though.

  • Your legendary cloak is rank 2. You’re missing out like 80 corruption resistance. Mind Flay corruption is also really bad on Hunters. You want the ones that raise your stats, mostly Severe and Expedient. Fixing your corruption would easily give you like 15% more dps. Do the dailies every day to farm Coalescing Visions and do as many Horrific Visions as possible to level up the cloak.
  • You have items with empty sockets. Seriously, why are they empty? Gems cost like 20 gold. Go to the Auction House and buy gems. Preferably +50 crit gems.
  • You’re not wearing any enchants. Both rings and the weapon can be enchanted. Rings can get +60 Crit and for the weapon get either Crow’s Nest Scope or Gale-Force Striking.
  • You’re wearing a melee trinket (Writhing Segment of Drest’agath). You need to be in melee range of the enemies when you use it or it won’t do any damage.
  • Your essences are rank 1 and 2. Level them up. Also Spark of Inspiration is trash, don’t use that one. I can’t do specific recommendations not knowing what you have and at which ranks though. But the usual ones to take are Vision of Perfection and Conflict and Strife. Look at the guides. Unfortunately essences aren’t very friendly to new players since it’s a feature from an earlier patch but you still have to level them up in this patch.
  • Your Azerite is pretty meh. Heart of Darkness isn’t great. You really need to get at least 1 Primal Instincts, preferably 3. For dungeons you want Rapid Reload too.

Hey Karen, I’m not top knotch at PvE, but heres a few things you may want to consider.

Class - Hunter is just super gear dependent. It’s about your traits, secondary stats and ilvl.

ilvl - being a new character yours is low so that #1 will be a big indicator of your damage. I’m sure you know and understand that, but always gotta cover that first.

Secondary Stats - You have very low crit and low haste right now. I know it sounds impossible, but with corruption you’re going to want to aim for 50% crit and 30% haste. This will greatly increase your damage. Start compiling these pieces with those stats now for your PvE set.

Barbed shot - Make sure your barbed shot is consistently up. There is an excellent weak auras for that. Looking at your talents you’re specced correctly, but since your crit is low you may have a harder time keeping it up 100%. Maintaining 3 stacks of fury via barbed shot for your pet is essential. Hard to do in some M+ packs, but once you get the hang of it and your team increases with speed you’ll find it to be easy.

Beast Cleave (AoE only)- Multi shot keeps up your beast cleave. For folks starting out i recommend doing a multi shot, then a regular shot then another multi so you never stop beast cleaving. Once you get better you’ll figure out a rotation that’s usable but until then try to do multi every other for Packs of 3 or more.

These are some basic things, When you get more into it your essences will have to change and you’ll have to change up some trinkets. You have 3 dance of deaths which is good, you may want to consider a rapid reload for M+.

I’d also like to push ya to the icy-veins guide. just seach “BM DPS” in google and should come right up. They have a lot of good information that will help you gear and tune your rotation.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies guys. Will look into the gems and reading up on icy veins. I have a hard time doing the visions which is why the cloak isn’t leveled up. I don’t have a lot of other spells for the amulet (or whatever they are called).

Being BM will make the visions easier. Just make sure you keep mend pet up, and don’t forget to misdirect your pet for threat. I suggest putting your pet on focus casting a misdirect focus target macro and then starting barbed shot to multi shot on packs. This will get you moving along swimmingly throughout the vision.

That shouldn’t be the case. The difficulty of the first few Horrific Visions is meant for the start of the patch. You should be able to do them easily with 430 gear or so, which you already surpass. Just go straight for the quest objective. You can get it to rank 5 just killing the boss (Thrall or Alleria).

Make sure you’re using a Ferocity pet and nothing will be able to kill it.

Once the quest asks you to do a different zone (at rank 6) you can just do those zones and ignore the main boss. It doesn’t matter if you don’t kill Thrall or Alleria for the quests after rank 6. You only get fewer Mementos.

Just make sure to spend the Mementos on the Titanic Research Archive every time and use a Sanity Restoration Orb before your Sanity drops too low.

One of the biggest things is keeping frenzy up on ur pet. I setfocus on my pet that way I can make sure I keep 3 stacks of frenzy at all times. Im pumping out about 70k dps these days.

Damn I always post on my pally by mistake lol. Post avove is from me.

If I were you I would replace the shoulders asap. They are not doing much for you. you already have a rapid reload on your helm and stacking another primal instincts or dance of death would be way better.

Next your haste seems very low to me. My guess is you are letting the barb stacks fall off because of that.

Do you use raid bots? Its free! I like it because it allows you to compare the gear you are wearing with gear in your bags.

Your rings and trinks are not doing much for you. Its slow going but over time you will pick up the right gear with the right stats and it wont be such a struggle.

Esscences are wrong…check out bloodmallet online. It stinks that we have to use so many online resources but it isnt very straight forward in game, so you have to do your homework!

With a few little switches you will see a huge difference! Good luck!

also noticed you dont have a wep enchant. gale force striking would help the haste.

Do you use pet targeting macros? If you really want to up the dps you might consider it.

The auto-cast system from blizzard is super slow on pets and macros makes it so that the pet is hitting the right target at all times. I macro them into every one of my spells. It makes switching targets a breeze and you wont miss out on dmg.

heres an example for barbshot

#showtooltip
/use Barbed Shot
/use Smack(Basic Attack)
/use Bite(Basic Attack)
/use Claw(Basic Attack)

one more thing your lvl 100 talent pick is interesting. ok ill see myself out now

FYI you don’t need to put your pet on focus to misdirect to it. I keep the tank on focus when running dungeons and use this macro which will misdirect to the tank or whatever I have on focus aned if nothing is on focus it will misdirect to my pet. Hope this helps , I can’t claim credit for writing it it’s just one of the many things I have found over the years.

#showtooltip misdirection
/cast [@focus,help] [@pet,exists] Misdirection

edit: not sure why it decided to post on some random trial alt I made and never used. But my main is a hunter if anyone was wondering about that.

Hey! Thanks for the macro. Definitely going to use this.

I stopped doing this and I found my DPS to increase. My pet’s normal melee damage was so low compared to others when I asked if they do this they said no. Maybe i’m wrong, but It felt as if it impeded my pet’s normal attack.

Interesting. I use that pet attack macro on both my barb and kill command. my dps is quite high and I have never noticed a dps decrease. if anything it gives me better control to switch targets more quickly.

Its also recommended by method on their website…may it RIP lol.

Definitely something that i’ll try again. It may have been my poor gear because I made the change to go off of it a while back.

When you say every spell, do you also include cobra shot and kill command in that?

along with all the comments on improving, I would just like to say that I am usually in the top ten on DPS with the BM Spec. I’ve even gotten second several times in raids. keep improving, research some guides, and you will be fine. the DPS hunter guide on Wowhead that others have mentioned is probably the best atm.
