What does shadow damage feel like?

Is it physical like your body is burnt? Or is it mental like you get hit and it gives you a really really bad headache?

Take a hot dog, and leave it out for 7 days. Now eat it. That is shadow damage.

Shadow damage feels like being hit by a horrible darkness… uh, it’s really quite painful.

It attacks you right in your anxiety. Like when you’re at the bottom of the stairs and you turn off the light and it suddenly feels like there’s something chasing you now that you can’t see it.

That’s shadow damage.

like having your hair so emo it would cut itself…:no_mouth::expressionless::neutral_face::thinking::smirk:

sorry, ill see myself out.

A feeling of bitter, fathomless cold, a thousand needles in your mind and an emptiness in your heart. Shadow damage is the chaotic, unknowable void, the infliction of horrific potentialities.

Just another way of saying Jerauld’s answer really.

Shadow is not the same as Void, very common mistake.

Shadow damage is physical sickness or illness, like cancer or plague.

Think Shadow, think Black Plague.

It feels like black

Is it, or do unholy death knights deal shadow damage because “death damage” would be a mechanical redundancy?

You used Void to describe Shadow, which is wrong.

That does not answer my question, sir.

I’m not Blizzard so couldn’t tell you.

Fair enough. I’ll break down my own sources and reasoning, just for the sake of clarifying.

Wowpedia describes shadow magic as "the manifestation of Shadow, also called Void. Void lords are entities composed of pure shadow energy. Old Gods are the manifestation of the Void.

Shadow abilities are able to impart feelings like despair, doubt, and panic. Healing can be sacrifice to deal damage with shadow magic."

If we are going off of Blizzard’s current cosmology for the Warcraft Universe, Death and Void are very different things (and even, to some degree, at odds against one another).

Based off of this information, we can deduce either of two things:

-That unholy death knights, warlocks with curses and plagues, necromancers, etc, are utilizing death magic instead of shadow magic (at least most of the time), and that such classes dealing shadow damage may be out of mechanical necessity rather than a lore confirmation

-That both of us are correct, and that such beings use a different “brand” of shadow magic and shadow damage from, say, a shadow priest or subject of the old gods.

Now, mind you, Blizzard’s need to distinguish shadow/void and death is kind of new in the grand scheme of things.

I’d imagine direct hits feel like getting a massive headache and head rush that makes you feel like you’re going to pass out while the damage over time effects feel like a fever that never gives you any relief. It just boils your insides away. I always liked the idea that the corruption spell was mutating DNA and causing the target to die from fast acting cancers it created.

Turn the lights off, grab flash light and make some shadow puppets! That’s what it feels like, I got a source too.

I’ve read in the Subtlety Rogue’s artifact description as something which inflicts immeasurable pain; due to it effect on both you physical body as well as your soul. Shadow Magic is vastly efficient in painfully ripping one’s soul out of their shell.

Subtlety Rogue’s artifact story also vaguely described how a soul taste as well.

Also the difference between Shadow And Void is literally similar to Venom and Poison.

While Void is used to manipulate emotion, break one’s will and induce them to madness, Shadow usually renders those completely invisible and inflict pain but those who could master it could do much more such as:

  • Disperse their body; rendering themselves as a ghostly black mist.
  • Empower their bodies and weapons with magic.
  • Create solid constructs such as chains, throwing knives, or stars from compressed Shadow.
  • Use Shadow Tendrils to extend the tips of their fingers; for the purpose of unlocking doors. (Quite useless since the caster could just phase through it.)
  • Or turn the caster into puddle of purple liquid.
