What does a Ret Paladin bring to anything?

Hey guys, i have a buddy whos looking to get back into the game after a long break and he’s currently thinking Ret Paladin with the main focus of M+ and raiding. Im trying to steer him away from it as i know the struggles he will endure trying to get invited to anything.

Am i missing something or is there actually no reason to bring a ret paladin to both m+ or raiding, that other melee specs like rogue, havoc, ww, dk etc dont just do infinitely better?

I dont even remember the last time playing this game that ive ever heard a guild or a m+ group actually looking for a ret paladin. Like how do they get shafted so hard?

Because they are stupid strong in PvP. I guess its a trade off. Which is why they stink in PvE

Uh, their insane utility?

Freedom, Bubble, Aura, Off-Healing, Off-Tanking, and a hard CC?

You could build a Ret to have cheap Holy Spenders that can be spent damaging a mob or healing someone else. If you take Divine Purpose, you get even more Free spenders or, if you take Seraphim, machine gun spenders even faster.

Insane damage and utility, not to mention he can coast up to 2100 rating in arena with minimal effort

Let him play what he wants to play - it’s the only way you’re going to get him “back into the game” and actually stick to it. He can make a prot/holy set to help him get into groups too… Or, you could play a tank/healer and you just create groups together.

You could say this about a lot of specs.

Have you played arenas ?

Ret has way more utility than havoc and ww. They are just undertuned currently.

Ret is fine unless your buddy is gonna be pushing for like top 1%.

They can pull 5k plus dps on most raid fights. Not to mention the great utility with BoP, BoF, WoG, Rebuke, divine shield, good AoE, etc.

You sacrifice a very negligible amount of dps for that utility.

Unless your raid group is so elitist that they kick people if the fight doesnt end in record time, ret is completely fine.

Lots of people do fine as Ret in PVE, and I wouldn’t even suggest not doing it solely because you can always go Prot or Holy. That said if he’s intent on DPSing there are certainly more meta options that would make grouping easier.

They bring the justice! And they’re a handy flashlight if it gets dark.

This.

Don’t be a metaslave, OP.

Ridiculously OP in PvP, but that’s all I can think of.

You become the most popular person when you bring wings to a party.

Just saying.

I like ret paladins in my parties, especially on necrotic weeks.

They don’t bring much of anything to M+.

DPS is decent but not amazing, outclassed by other specs. Very little useful utility.

Won’t have a problem completing keys with one but no one is going to go out of their way to take one to a key.

Unless you’re a super elitist what does it matter? Ret is in a very decent place. Clutch Lay on hands and blessing of sac save raid wipes.

Also why are you trying to steer your friend away when you don’t even know your self, OP and need to make a thread asking why?

This shows how word of mouth just travels without actual facts being presented. People believe anything. This is why it’s good to be cynical.

They won’t hold a group back from doing ksm or anything similar in pve, but they also don’t bring anything that’s really needed either. They have a lot of smaller utility which can be helpful, but a lot of their utility is very niche pve-wise.

I love my ret , if that’s what he played it is still a great option. You mentioned specifically PVE content, but my god it slaps in PVP. You wade into a fight and cleave the holy hell out of everything and murder people with big big big dam. I really enjoy playing it in M+ too even though my setup isn’t exactly optimal for it, I can go into an easy 14 and top meters still. (That is pretty casual though)

Lay on hands, wog off heals, blessing of sac, devo aura, stuns

doesn’t seem very niche to me.

Being a ret paladin is the only Good class and the best transmogs there is

Good in every spec plus you’re the only class/spec combo that can deal holy damage as a DPS spec

Some say it’s a boring spec, it’s not, very simple rotation
