I’m sure this has been asked before but what exactly, if anything, do you get from pet battles? Do you get gold, XP, Resources, Azerite, reputation? I’m just trying to figure out if getting into pet battles will be worth it.
Satisfaction and fun, mostly. But yes, almost all the other things you listed.
I don’t do nearly as much battling as some of the posters in here. I mostly just collect pets I don’t have yet, and then do pet battle WQs when they are convenient plus the daily battles at the Darkmoon Faire when they are up.
Pet battle WQs typically give the polished charms that are the currency of the pet world, which can be used to slowly make gold by buying the newest pets and selling them on the AH. Pet battles also give character exp on a par with a quest. The Darkmoon battles give double that because you do a quest as well as the battle, and I have slowly leveled three bank alts almost entirely doing those quests (inlcuding this guy).
Pet battle WQs also often give war resources and azerite but not in huge quantities, just as much as any other basic WQ - but, if you have the pets and an addon to remind you which ones to use for that battle, it is a lot faster than a lot of other WQs.
They also give the same rep as other WQs, and occasionally - such as in 8.2 with Rustbolt and Nazj - they give an opportunity to get some extra rep above and beyond what you get without them. I definitely got flying at least a day earlier than I would have without the pet battles.
Like most systems in the game, it takes some time investment, but once you are proficient with it, it pays off.
What do you gain by playing WoW?
When you first took up playing WoW you didn’t know if you’d enjoy it, or if it would be a worthwhile addition to your life. One thing you learned along the way was no effort = no reward. Put the effort in and you get various rewards, none of which have any value outside WoW except for the fun and sense of achievement you (sometimes) end up with.
Pet battling can give you rewards within the game, rep gains and various types of resources in pretty insignificant amounts and the pets themselves to collect and have trailing along behind you. As with the rest of the game no effort = no reward. If you spend the time to collect and level pets and learn the mechanics of pet battling you may end up having fun and getting a sense of achievement.
No-one can guarantee you’ll find the time and effort worthwhile. If you want to try it you’ll find plenty of welcoming players here, who have found it worth their time, happy to give you help and advice. If you don’t I hope you enjoy whatever you do choose to spend your time doing.
I suspect it’s like anything else. You get out of it what you put into it.
My personal story is this. I came back to WoW when MOP was released. I looked on battle pets as a stupid waste of time. But one time I happened to have a Feline Familiar out and was amused by the cat flying on a broom. I decided to level him to 25. Along the way I learned it was a lot more complex than I imagined.
1100+ pets later, I guess you can say it was worthwhile. Whether it was hunting down rare pets, outsmarting other players in the pvp queue or amassing a small fortune selling spare pets, it’s been worthwhile.
Not everyone will enjoy it and a lot of folks get annoyed by little things. But it’s something you can always fall back on. You can spend a lot of time acquiring a piece of gear that will be outdated in a month. But that level 25 Feline Familiar will always retain it’s value. Unless it gets nerfed for some reason. But he’ll still follow you around on the broom.
Last week when we had the “win 5 pet battles” weekly, I got a family battle training stone (add 1 level to some family) when I won one of the battles. This wasn’t the “win 5” weekly quest reward (the level 25 upgrade) but was something random from winning the 3 or 4th battle.
That was the first time I can recall getting something like that from pvp pet battles. I imagine that if I did pvp pet battles more often I would have seen this more often.
Enjoyment, fun, break from questing. Quit thinking like a Raid Guild Employee for a minute!
Super helpful! Thanks so much
Hello. All the stuff you mentioned can be earned from pet battles.
I don’t think you mentioned pets.
I have 1000+ unique pets. Over 400 of those pets I earned by capturing them during pet battles. I have 1700 pets counting multiples. For whatever reason I have 2 or more of certain pets. Most of those were also captures during pet battles. Pet Battles get you more pets.
Pet Battles give you reason to explore.
Certain pets can only be found at certain places, some only at certain times .
Maybe not great places, but you will be able to say you’ve been there, lol
Yeah fun, sense of satisfaction etc is all good. But to answer the OP’s question, I’v made millions with pets. I owe my brutosaur to pets. Pet flipping, pet levelling, pet dungeons, pet charms for more pets… So many options for gold making open up once you get into the system.
I have 7 alts at 120. Don’t play any of them. Pandaria pet battles give 35k xp each. During a content lull I do the pandaria run on an alt every day (11 battles). Get half a lvl for the alt, and 3 pets reach 25 for the gold. When one alt reaches max, the next starts the rounds.
Many interesting things you can do with the system.
