What do you do when a character name is taken?

Just wondering what people do when they want to transfer to a new realm or even create a new one on a new realm and the name they really want or have used for years is already taken?

Personally I have 4 names i want to use on a realm i am going to transfer all may characters to but they all show as unavailable. When searching the armory, warcraftlogs, and raiderio my toons are the only ones that come up and for my realm. Do people just change their name or modify it in some way like using alt chars for it?

Grumble and pick a different one.

I can spend hours picking a name. Sometimes settling on one only to delete the alt afterwards because it just wasn’t feeling right.

I don’t have specific names in mind usually though. The only one I wish I had was my vanilla druid mains original name. I carelessly lost it through a realm transfer :frowning:

I don’t think alt codes are usable anymore for new names
, not 100 % tho

Add a few XXX’s and some ASCIII characters :sunglasses:

They are very much still useable. I use them quite frequently because I got tired of not being able to use the names I want.

Add letters, alt some things…
Rage when it doesn’t work and just roll until random one works.

Xxsephirothxx is taken? Fine! Xxxsephirothxxx!

Do what villains do… repeat a vowel.

I just break out the online thesaurus and get to work, it usually doesn’t take me more than 20 minutes or so to get a good name.

Just a warning, if you put special characters in your name then people who know how to actually pronounce the characters are laughing at your name. We had a guy named Andy who used a Nordic A-looking character and someone recognized it we started calling him “Oorndy” and would do the Muppets Swedish Chef accent in raid. “oorndy der floopen on der flooren”

I moved servers and now all my names are trash because I don’t want to use special characters. Help.

Alt codes :sunglasses:

I keep a Google Docs list of cool names that I’d consider using for inspiration. And name-parts that I could mash together, like “Harrowhart” or “Ravenhearth.” Or sometimes I use a plural of something. Like “Hollies” instead of “Holly.”
