Is there a way to see what character a friend is currently playing? I mean from the friend list/notifier in the battle.net launcher. Other than the obvious ask them via chat?
what is this “friends” thingy?
If you have added them as a bnet friend you should be able to see whatever character they’re on from the app unless they’re hiding offline. Then you’d only be able to see them in-game.

He is on the Bnet list. Last time I saw him on was back during Cata. Wanted to meet in-game before chat

Can also see if they are in another Blizzard game that is launched from the Battle.net platform (Hearthstone, Starcraft . . . ).

I think the only way to see which character they’re playing is by logging into the game and checking on your friend’s list. You’ll only see which realm they’re playing on through the BNet app itself, as far as I know.
