What changes were made to graphics settings?

So I had my graphics settings tweaked to run smoothly without maxing out my graphics card most of the time. Now I’m seeing ridiculous GPU usage even sitting inside the inn in Heart of the Forest staring at a wall. I dread what’s going to happen in Dungeons or (even worse) Raids.

I figured out one (terrible) change which was removing the framerate limit I’d set up. So the card was trying to render >200fps at 4k… on a 144Hz monitor. Thanks for that… But even capping that back to 120fps still results in the card running at >80% utilization.

I’ve tweaked a few other settings downwards and got it a bit lower, but it’s still far higher than it was yesterday pre-patch. And again, this is inside, staring at a wall. It’s not even outside where there is a ton of terrain, textures, fog, moving people and whatnot.

So rather than having to spend hours testing every damned graphics setting one at a time, can anyone highlight particular changes that were made with this patch that are likely to impact performance?

check out this post Massive stutters with DF client - #75 by Natsukirei-arugal

Alot of people are having issues GPU wise with the new client, and nobody knows what was actually changed or not changed but broken in the background because blizzard has not acknowledged theirs an issue

This should not have hit live.

Hmm, I wouldn’t have said stuttering but I must say I spent most of my time today just trying to get the UI right and start testing which addons do and don’t work. So it’s possible the game would have stuttered if I was moving about doing stuff rather than just staring at a wall.

edit: Ok there are definitely stutters. Just logged in fresh and in the initial view where I logged in (roughly top down in the Heart of the Forest Inn) it was sitting at a steady 120 fps at 30% GPU. Which sounds about normal. The moment I panned the camera it stuttered with a drop to 60fps before bouncing back up to 120 and the GPU utilization going up to >80%.

I have just been doing some testing and in that same spot I can slowly pan the camera down and watch the GPU utilization on my second monitor. At a certain point it immediately jumps from ~35% to ~55%. For no good reason that I can see. So obviously there are certain effects being rendered (of maybe occlusion being used) that is hitting the cards hard.

I too have noticed stutters here and there, also I have personally noticed a change in the font of certain text. For example, the font on nameplates and health bar numbers are different or in the least a bit blurry now. Anyone else notice the blurrier text on certain things?

All of my time in SW last night was hard stuttering and lag. Normally i dont see that at all. Once I switched on Chromie time on, I left SW and it got mostly better. I havent even tried Oribos yet or Org.

Ok Im not the only one. I was running fine in Oribos before pre patch and now Im dropping framerates and stuttering like crazy. If i barely function in Oribos there is no way I can phase into anything else.

Your typical WoW update with memory leaks…

This! I thought maybe I messed something up with my monitor or PC settings, but then I log into classic and it’s all good, and there’s no setting I know of that is any different from before Pre-Patch. Specifically decided to take screenshots of the nameplates from the exact same distance in both classic and retail, and it’s very obvious retail got way thicker, which must be what contributes to it being blurry. Some other text also seems a bit off, but not as much as nameplates.
Have you managed to find a solution?
