I get in VC with friends while I RP but I do not use my voice for it. RP is a writing exercise first for me. That would defeat the point.
Even my DnD group is not voice based. We work solely on text.

I just realized/remembered they had voice chat in New World. One of my friends was running around the RP server trying to RP his character heād named Margaret Thatcher. He sounded like one of the Monty Python guys trying to voice an older British woman.
The thing New World had was there was a proximity to their VC so it didnāt go too far. I donāt think Blizz has that.
We used to have a DM who would do voices for all the NPCs and it was actually the best thing
I like voice acting in table top and Iād like to give voice acting in wow a shot. Itās really fun once youāre comfortable with it and get used to the fact that you may not ever sound like a pro. But thereās something nice about that, too. Some songs sound better when theyāre not over-produced and have some grit.
However, a public voice acting channel sounds like a tough sellā¦. Unless they did it like they do with team speak in RDRO and GTA, which is actually a pretty good experience.
Voice RP is rough.
Even in something like D&D, my experience is that for people not already used to it, it takes awhile for them to really get comfortable doing it. And thatād likely just be MOST people on WoW. Iād suspect thereād also be some awkwardness for a lot of people not wanting their family / neighbors / parents / whoever to hear their RP, as that kind of thing can be odd without the context (and at times with it).
The reality is rather than attempting to get better at it or deal with the quirks of it, most people would just immediately turn it off. WoW is an old game, with a history of text-only chat. We already have tons of players who refuse to even join a voice chat for raiding, or if they do, theyāll literally never speak (one of our long-time raiders, like, several years, only ever spoke in the final couple months before we disbanded. Actually, 2 of our long-time raiders were that way). Thereās no way using it for RP would become popular.
If that were something that people wanted, theyād already be using Discord for it. And while Iām sure some do, it is by no means widespread. Because itās not something people really want.
Iām a dude with an extremely deep, monotone voice so trying to RP as this character would be hilarious
just use voicemod to change your voice output with a changer and you can make it sound like who/what ever you want.
Usually when people say āothers donāt want itā they are really saying ātheyā donāt want it. Because they really canāt speak on behalf of everyone other than themselves.
Also, how many innovations has been thrust upon the world in the last 40 years and people adapot evolve and continue on?
Itās really no different than learning the nuances of the next Xpac.
Itās a realistic viewpoint that most RPers likely wouldnāt opt in to any voice option in WoW. That requires a kind of active engagement that I donāt think most of us are here for in a literal or metaphorical sense. If given the option to opt in or ignore that feature, Iād put money on over 90% players immediately ignoring it. Which is too bad because Iād try it.
Maybe 12 years ago when RP was at its height, youād find a good group who was interested. But now? Slim chance.
Also I have voicemod and while it isnāt the worst thing in the world, it also isnāt the best. It can be a little goofy with realistic voices, and most of the premade options are robotic or sociopathic.
finally! my time to shine.
A lot of us are in Discord with friends, streaming movies or doing other things while in an RP scene. Iām sure there are people who want to voice RP, but it should never be mandatory.
Wait, you can RP with friends?
Wow, that would be easier.
I donāt RP with those ppl, lol. Who does that?
Iām female IRL and I tend to play male characters to avoid unwanted ERP tells and harassment. Also, I think they look better overall in this game (like how I prefer the female characters in LOTRO and also donāt get harassed in that game, so I play my femelf there instead of here).
So no. Literally canāt do it, and itās awkward to try .
I chill in guild VC all the time while roleplaying, but donāt use it for actual roleplay things other than organizing DMād events or conveying OOC info.
Separately, years of creepy stalking/harassment by maladjusted someones after hearing my voice tends to damper my enthusiasm to RP voice or speak in pug voice chats in general.
