This is what I listen to the most. This kind of music.
Greatest harmonica player that ever existed. After watching that concert, I dare anyone to disagree.
Iād propose Lee Oskar from the band War. Blues Traveller reminds me of him because they both have belts with various harmonicas.
I always felt John was an underrated harmonica player, but I think his skill was more in writing than musicianship.
EDIT: No harmonica player list would be complete without Little Walter. Probably the most influential harmonica player, BT borrows from his style imho.
Or Bob Dylan
In the video concert I posted, they did an awesome cover of Low Rider and your mention of the harmonica belt, makes me think Lee Oskar was a heavy influence on John Popper.
As was Ringo as a drummer. Heās not John Bonham or anything, but he can create some great rhythms.
Completely agree. Good stuff you posted!
He can blow a harmonica, but thatās about it.
But heās Bob āFāingā Dylan so who am I to judge.
I know, Dylan wasnāt technically great but he could strum a guitar, play harmonica, and write poetry. Itās like with John, Popper is probably the best technical harmonica player out of the list (his performance in the concert you posted was amazing) but they were great musicians that played the harmonica if that makes sense.
Dylan was maybe the best song writer ever and John the greatest rhythm guitarist, they werenāt known for their harmonica. I hate that people disrespect Ringo, not only was he a great drummer but he was integral to their song writing. I love blues harmonica and Blues Traveler. Harmonica adds a lot of soul to music.
I adore Bob Dylan and yes, he is a poet and arguably a modern day Shakespeare. Iām not too crazy abut his voice, but the things he writes about and his way with words is genius.
I like how you worded that about Popper being better with the technical stuff regarding harmonica, but it all come down to how does it sound. The Beatles music is not technically difficult, but sounds so fāing great.
It would be the same with harmonica. Popper is Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica, but that doesnāt mean others canāt get on down with their bad selves into the heavy blues and sound great.
Final post for awhile. Give others a chance to post. How about some Dave Mathews Band with Mr. Popper?
I donāt want to sound mean, but I think his voice sounds whiny.
It does sound whiny. I just try to ignore it and focus on his words which are golden and his guitar playing which is good folk music.
Here is a remix of Phil Collinsā In The Air Tonight by a female singer. And it also sounds more techno.
Every time I see or hear his name, I remember this scene from the movie French Kissā¦ āoui, baaaaahb!ā

I prefer a real voice to autotune, but I understand Dylan is a learned appreciation. A lot of the old blues guys didnāt have great voices but they were real voices, if that makes sense. I guess I focus lyrics, itās like Springsteen where most prefer the Manfred Mann versions. This was my gateway song that led me to learn more about him. Turn on CC, heās quite the wordsmith.
He wrote a lot of other great songs like Blowing in the Wind and Knocking on Heavenās Door. Hereās someone with more vocal talent covering Dylan, I believe this song was responsible for 12-strings becoming popular. From the days before Milli Vanilli when lip syncing on television was not career ending.
Ok, stand aside Blues Traveler. Youāre good, but itās time for some old school blues. This person was the biggest influence on Jimi Hendrix.
Love me some Rush! Great song.
I donāt think Iāve seen Santana in here, but I havenāt looked that hard. In any event, have some Santanaā¦
