I think if wow got shut down entirely, I’d probably quit playing MMO’s, I’ve tried multiple and just speaking from a fluid mechanical feeling, they all feel pretty janky to me. Little things bother me too, how a lot of characters in these games jump with a very stiff motion, for example, legs out in front of them like they’re riding a chair through the air.
Magic feels like a secondary system, flooded with in game immersion breaking advertisements about how much more I could enjoy their game with their “premium currency”. Very “meh” music and a camera that has the fluid motion of tapioca pudding.
I’ve been waiting for a “wow killer” for years, just to enjoy something even more and that feels great. Alas, a lot of other games just feel choppy, even looking at a video of the jobs for final fantasy I wasn’t really enthused with the graphics.
I know everyone really loves the customization slider and to do whatever they want with characters, but with world building, there’s something to be said about how wide that scope goes. Being facetious I made my hunter in monster hunter world, look like terry crews but with huge pink pig tails and booty shorts. That was my fault, but still. I see other MMO’s where people can customize themselves to a similar degree and it just makes the world feel less immersive the more costumes and silly objects you add.
Not that people can’t look super silly in wow, I saw a guy who looked like a luchador running around in Drustvar, but even that, against the scale of the world didn’t make them pop out like they didn’t belong.
This is all personal opinion of course, but I can’t find another online MMO that I enjoy playing as much as wow, whether it’s retail or classic. Which, with classic, I’m really surprised no one has caught up to yet. But playing it reminds me of how much further behind the rest of the MMO market is, it’s crazy.
