So I made a name ßææßææßææßææ. Logged into the server and asked if my name was dumb (which i knew it was) then was kicked to the character screen and flagged for rename.
Is there something im not aware of? I thought if a name wasn't a swear word or offensive it was fine. If the name looks annoying is that enough to get flagged? And how did it happen within 10 seconds of me logging in?
You can’t make dumb names it’s against the rules. Feel fortunate you merely got flagged and not arrested.
Was it an RP server?
FBI is on the way right now
is there actually something in the rules that says " If your name looks dumb you will have to make another"?
Think so, I got flagged for using Baddaddy a few years back and had to rename.
Absolutely. The catchall clause right at the bottom of all the other rules about the game that pretty much says that Blizzard can decide on the fly what is and isn’t against the rules.
It stops rules lawyers making pedantic arguments.
All the rules actually state is that names must be appropriate and inoffensive.
The catch is that the number of reports a name receives from players is one of the factors that determines if it is appropriate or not.
From the Code of Conduct:
“…names—must be appropriate and inoffensive.”
“Take note that acceptable names are determined by player reports and Blizzard’s decision, and role-playing servers may have distinct standards for using game-appropriate names.”
Basically any name could be deemed unacceptable if your realm hates it enough.
Character Naming Rules
- The character name must be between 2-12 characters long.
- Accented characters are supported.
- Numbers and symbols are not supported.
- Mixed capitals and spaces are not supported.
I guessing is has something to do with the symbols rule? Except ß is a german letter and æ is an old english letter. But the character screen allows you to type all of these in…and wont let you type in other symbols or numbers.
I would assume your name got actioned because it is completely ASCII characters.
Kinda like how it’s now impossible make a character name that both starts and ends in “x” Too many players used that to make names like xxcutiexx and other crap, now even legit names that start and end with that letter can’t be made.
Apparently starting a name with Mr is offensive (I tried to name an earthen Mrgneissguy), but not Ms, Dr, Mx or any other abbreviation (except Mrs b/c it also starts with ‘Mr’). Seems inconsistent to me, but whatever.
Nice 5 year old necro, but I digress.
I agree though, Blizz is NOT consistent with their naming policy which is here, BTW (since it wasn’t linked, in the 5 years, this thread has been around):
General Naming Policy for ALL Servers
IMPORTANT: SPECIAL NAMING POLICIES FOR THOSE ON RP SERVERS!
While this next one pertains to the forums, these forums guidelines goes into a bit deeper in describing the same / similar in-game policies, in what’s “appropriate” and what “isn’t”:
It might be a bit of a call back, but it was the first post that showed up when I Googled, so it’s quite possible someone else might Google the naming rules and come here
Hi Aspiration! This is an old-old-old rule from Vanilla days where titles are not allowed, Lord, Lady, King, Queen, can also not start a name. Back when the naming scheme was more closely followed and meant to be roleplay. Naming schemes have become much more lax, but those ancient filters still exist.
Yeah, they do have the same “must have RP names” for RP servers specifically. So, “Aspiration” is a fine name to have on a non-RP server. But, it’s (technically) not allowed on RP Servers. I still report bad RP names, when I see them, but it does feel like a never ending battle.
This isn’t just in regard to Classic WoW, either. This pertains to the Retail version, as well.
The only names I’ve kept up with reporting are the extraneously un-rp ones, like, hunterone, or daddyuwu, kind of thing. For RP servers that is.
That’s actually a peculiar notion to me, and perhaps that’s my perspective, but people name their children adjectives, adverbs, or concepts all the time. I don’t just mean like, “Charity”, “Chastity”, “Hope”, “Autumn”,13 popes that named themselves “Innocent” (and one antipope), but also surnames like, Emmett Brown, or Leif Eriksson. Someone named themselves “Erik’s son”. And then what seems like 90% of names really mean a concept anyways, like Peter means Rock, or Yamamoto mean “Base of the Mountain.”
Anywho, I don’t see the real difference between “Aspiration” and more common concept-names like: Grace, Faith, or Joy, except commonality.
While true (and I prefer that over something silly like “Hunterlolz”), the RP naming policy does mention “non-medieval” and/or “non-fantasy” being a “no no”, on RP servers.
However, I’d rather deal with seeing “Aspiration” than “Hunterlolz”.
