What are the reasons to keep playing WoW right now?

Howdy,

Been here since vanilla, but have been losing steam with the game after Legion. My wife and I have 6 month subs going, but the time is running out and we’re not sure if we even want to play anymore. We haven’t actually touched WoW probably since the last payment of it.

Not sure if should just switch to FF14, ESO or BDO. They are all doing very well for themselves, from what I have seen online. WoW and Blizzard seem like shells of their former selves.

What reasons do you feel are there to keep playing WoW these days? I should mention that my hardcore raiding days are long behind me.

I play for the rewards, especially the limited time ones. So if I want the KSM mount I have no choice but to play and gear up. If I had no goal I wouldn’t play.

Same reason to play any game.
Are you having fun?
That’s literally all you have to ask yourself to find your answer if you should keep going.

I’m having a blast, so I keep playing. Raiding with my guild friends helps.

While I agree that Blizz seem like an empty shell, I don’t believe in limiting myself to one MMO. I think we all learn what we do or do not enjoy by playing a variety of games when possible. FFXIV has a free trial and I think ESO has a similar free-play style ( you are just very limited for inventory and other items).

I understand how you feel. I quit playing after Wrath and came back when I heard about all the class fantasy in Legion. BFA was a big disappointment and I think I hoped that order halls would bring some of that feeling back, but it hasn’t.

I only resubbed for this month because of my guild. I took a break after getting AOTC, but never really liked Torghast so the changes don’t entice me at all. So if the majority of people I enjoy raiding with don’t return? Then I won’t be returning after this month.

If you are on the fence for reasons other than game play or story then I would suggest just paying with gold for a month until you figure it out.

Well, I’m having fun. We’re also less than a week into the new patch, and certainly haven’t seen everything, including the new raid. There are new encounters in the maw, and the anima rewards have been massively bumped.

Yeah, Korthia is very Isle of Quel’Danis right now, but I’m sure it’ll get better over time - like in a week or so.

Maybe someday I’ll try out some other game, but it’s not looking like that’ll happen anytime soon.

Because you want too

You could both try pvp together. Its rough to start if you’re new to it but it can feel really rewarding once you get comfortable with it. Its challenging and dynamic and no encounter is ever the same

Right now? Trying to get core raid spot in this guild im trialing for. I won’t lie, if that doesn’t work out, I’ll probably quit until 9.2.

Honestly, it sounds like it probably is time for you and your wife to take a break from WoW. Go ahead and try some of the other games and see if there’s one you enjoy.

I stay for some of the old content I want to do and because I have friends and active guilds that still play WoW.

It’s tough to quit after investing a lot of time. At some point though you just have to take the loss and move on.

I do want to. I have loved WoW and it’s world since 2004. But I’m not sure it’s the same game anymore.

I’m just not a fan of the world quest system, the esports focus on Mythics or the time gated rep grind.

My raiding days are long behind me too, all the way back to Lich King. But I am still having fun playing, and I like the new Korthia zone. Fun is the main reason. As long as I am enjoying it, I will keep playing. I do some old content as well for transmogs, pets, etc. I have some different things to focus on that are fulfilling in their own way. But Korthia has had most of my attention this week

Draenei. I’ve played the game with folks and without folks. I’ve PvP’d and I’ve PvE’d. The enjoyment I get from playing a Draenei is consistent. RP is always my backup if I end up playin’ alone :woman_shrugging:

I reached that point myself about wanting to love WoW as much as I used to around WoD/Legion. That emotional attachment kept me playing even though I was burned out and miserable for a lot of WoD (the WoD flight fiasco didn’t help). Legion was the last straw for me personally that killed any hope that things would go back to the way they used to be. I have a different perspective now and it’s easier to let go than it used to be.

WoW isn’t the same game anymore and it never will be. The devs change things significantly each xpac. Each version replaces the last. I carry my characters, achievements, and collectibles from one version to the next, but that does not mean that it’s the same game it used to be.

For me, I play because I find the game fun. I like the lore, the NPCs, and yes… even the stories. I like my characters, I like playing my characters, and I like just idly roaming around, killing mobs, and taking their stuff for no other reason than that.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that the story is great. I enjoy it, but I have to look at it through a very non-critical lens. Kinda like the Star Wars Prequels, or some of the stuff in the LOTR/Hobbit movies. But I still like it.

Especially DK/Arthas/Bolvar stuff. I think that’s some of the best fantasy lore to be found.

Honestly, just my people. I pay to hang out with my friends, and do things with them. If I wasn’t GM, and wasn’t a raid leader / arena partner, I would probably have quit big time.

My firends and my guild.

Saddly, I lost one of those yesterday and I’m guessing there goes the guild. Can’t decide if I’m going to look for a new raiding guild or just dump the game until 9.2 or w/e comes next.

It is what it is.

To each their own, but all of those MMOs you’ve listed I find to be lackluster and boring. It sucks too because I’m a huge Final Fantasy and Elder Scrolls fan.

The same reason as before , you have free time to waste and have nothing better than wow . You play wow .

There’s no good reason to play this incarnation of WoW. Ask yourself: “what am I playing for?”

  • ‘I want to see what happens with the story.’ Why? First of all, you can just Youtube any major cutscene (or, really, any quest at all). Second, are you really that invested in the tale they are telling? Do you really care how things are going to work out - especially considering that, given how negatively-received this expansion has been overall, they would be complete fools not to utterly abandon most of its plot points immediately with 10.0?

  • ‘I want to play with my friends in our guild.’ Most of the guilds I’ve encountered have become massively fractured in the past 10 months, to the degree that friends lists better resemble a tumbleweed-strewn dustbowl than a buzzing hive of sociability.

  • ‘I really enjoy the raiding.’ Potentially legitimate response, but is the raid experience in SL so unique that you can’t miss a moment of it? Won’t the next expansion’s raids just scratch that itch equally well?

  • ‘I love Ion’s systems.’ … … … lol.
