What are "mechagnomes" really?

hello.
my question is simple with zero wiggle room of nuance.
are mecha gnomes robots wearing skin or, gnome going chrome?

if you want a explanation.
robots wearing skins = Advanced AI that thinks its human. one that is simply just a robit in actuality.
think west world or " synth " style.

gnome going chrome = from the moment they understood the weakness of the flesh it disgusted them. they craved the strength and certainty of steel, aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Regular gnomes cling to flesh as if it will not decay and fail them. One day the crude biomass they call a temple will wither and they will beg the mecha gnomes to save them. but they are already saved. for the machine is immortal.
even in death.
they serve the rustbolt rebelion.

I think the questline leading to unlocking the mechagnomes explains this, but I’m not positive I’m not misremembering.

But they’re basically just gnomes who are fanatical about machines to the point where they want to become part machine. They are organic originally.

I don’t think this is true. Some of them are too far gone. Like the king guy. He’s more robot than gnome!

Also with some of the mods for mechagnomes they seem way more like robots.

Mechagnomes are quadruple-amputee torsos who have access to high-tech prosthetics.

There are two separate variations of gnomekind called “mechagnomes”.

First are the original titan-forged automata who were apparently mostly turned into modern fleshy gnomes by the curse of flesh. We encountered some in Northrend.

Second are the modern Mechagon mechagnomes who have a strong back-to-unnature movement in their culture, replacing organic body parts with mechanical prosthetics once more.
