What are advantages of running my own keys?

I know I’m late to the Mythic + scene. This is the first expansion I’ve done them on, as I didn’t play in BFA until late. Sorry if this sounds very noobish.

I understand I get a key when I do an M+ or from my vault. As a healer, I can just go to LFG and sign up for other groups.

To run my key, I have to either make my own group or ask another group to run mine. Now I don’t necessarily want the responsibility or take time to put a group together, so basically I never run my own keys.

So what am I missing from not running my own keys? Will this affect my Raider io, which I admit I know very little about?

You get to be the one choosing your party. It gives you more agency. Plus you can’t be kicked as a survival hunter!

Really it’s just the ability to pick your team. If your into getting certain classes or ilvl together you can. I’ve never understood why people get so bent about not making the time on “their key”. Yes their key gets down ranked but if they really want to do a certain level or higher they just join a group instead.

I’ve not ran one of my key’s once. I like picking a group based on what I feel like. Want an easy night, pick a dungeon I think is cake and go for a lower key. Want to test myself then I go harder.

Not everyone can just join a key.

Eg good luck joining a 15 for any run as a ilvl 210 warrior even with good io. When I make a group for example if you not first at a ilvl I consider min won’t even be able to list. 2nd not of a class I want won’t even look at you regardless warrior falls into that won’t take for example as don’t bring anything I want. There dps I can get elsewhere unless there massively overgeared. 3 io to match the instance so for a 15 expect to need to be near 1300.

The above is similar to what many people do for 15s as such there is quite a number of people that can’t just go join a key.

The value of making your own key is being able to get into those keys you otherwise would not. They don’t want there keys down ranked as without there key there not getting into high runs even just for chest.

The biggest advantage of running your own key is it lets you punch above your io score. I have an io score of about 930 for example and as such would probably never get into a PuG 14 key but I have a 14 Key in my bag from +2ing the 12 I got at the beginning of the week. It may be less of an issue if you are a healer or a tank but as a dps the competition for group slots is fierce and running your own key definitely helps to get around that.

While I agree with most of your post, I dont woth your healer/tank comment. If anything groups expect higher io from those specs because they are what sets the pace for the group in a way. When I had 8/8 14s timed I spent over an hour trying to get into a 15. Now that I got KSM, I get into them almost all the time. Now that im 8/8 15s I am having to wait longer for 16s again.

I’m not complaining, just an observation.

But yes running your own key lets you pick who comes. It can also help boost your io if your skill and gear is above the keys you have done so far in your io profile.

Makes sense.

I don’t understand how raider io scores add up yet. I’ll need to do some reading.

There are 3 major advantages to running your own key:

  1. You always get invited. No more applying to 50 groups and getting declined.

  2. You get to choose who joins which means you can specify what comp you want and check the competency of the players yourself. If you join someone else’s key you might be carrying their friend’s alt or some such.

  3. If you time your own key, you now have a higher level key. This is the easiest way to increase your score.

You get to pick who comes to your group, but if the group fails your key drops a level.
