Yesterday I had an extremely lazy day, sat on my PC for probably 12 hours for the first time in who-know-how-long. I spent most of the time playing Diablo IV and trying to flip items in WoW on my other screen.
Yesterday, after a couple of non-tracked examples I got curious, I bid on 31 items. Epics that people list for 4g bid/66g buyout for example. Dwarven Hand Cannon, Stockade Pauldrons, etc easy to resell items. Just trying to get a few things to make my gold journey that much easier.
I kept the screen up and was tracking the best I could when an auction went from “Medium” to “Short” time remaining and I added the characters who listed the auctions so that I could see if they were online tracking what they posted.
31 items from 11 characters is what I ended up tracking - one character had over half of these items (16).
Of those 31 items, 26 of them mysteriously ended with less easily less than 10 minutes left in the auction, and likely less than 5 minutes remaining. In every single one of those 26 cases the player who posted the auction was not online at the time I was supposedly “outbid”. Of the other 5, I expect that someone just did a buyout because many of these items were the low-bid and low-buyout price when I bid on them - totally understandable.
Obviously with that many items, yes some will also get poached last second. But I did not win a single item on bid yesterday, and not one of the characters listing these auctions logged in/out for the entire time I had them added. Every single time I was “oubid” the item disappeared from the AH - I was not able to relocate it and place another bid from the “bids” tab or a manual search for the item. It was off the AH completely, all 31 times. I was closing and reopening AH window and Friends list every 5-10 min (more as the auction times got to “Short”) to see if the people just had a spreadsheet or timers or what ever and really took it seriously to not get their low bid price taken advantage of.
So my conclusion is that people have automatic addons in some capacity to cancel these auctions seconds or minutes before it ends, and before someone can win a bid on them for a 75-90% discount. I don’t think there’s a more logical explanation of how I lost 100% of those bids while actively online for a full day after already having a lot of anecdotal evidence from the past few weeks where I only won 2 bids out of around 60 attempts (non-scientific on these 60ish, but I know I won 2).
So what addon does this, and if it’s not botting I plan to take part so that I can post stuff for 3g bid and 400g buyouts with 0 risk while I’m not online like these players are doing.
