They were pilots in Warcraft 2. Dwarves were the pilots in 3.

No. They were Gnomes.

Nope. They made a point of being excluded in WarCraft III. Their tech was present, but they were busy nuking their own city.

I think there was a snippet somewhere a long while back that said they were absent because of the problems w/ troggs and radiation in Gnomeregan.

Translation: We forgot gnomes when we designed Warcraft 3 and had to come up with a reason why they weren’t in the game

From what I found about the gnomes of warcraft 3:

The gnomes were originally planned to be their own faction in Warcraft III, but were later rolled into the Alliance (though no actual gnomes appear in the game). –Game Informer #308: Reforging Real-time Strategy, pg. 57

Supposedly the new Flying Machine is using a gnome model.

In the original Warcraft 3 manual, the only mention of Gnomes is on the Gyrocopter text. It states: “The ingenious dwarven engineers, taking a nod from their inventive gnomish cousins, constructed the ultimate airborne scout vehicle.”
