Pokemon came out in 1996
Hunting and the concept of beast companions is much older.
And obviously pet battles are inspired by Pokemon
Hunters were inspired from the Grizzly Adams tv show that came out in 1977. Way before Pokemon.

Hunters were inspired by D&D which in turn was inspired by Tolkein and other much older sources from folklore like Robin Hood or mythology in characters like Artemis.
Do you think this was when humans first came to realize that they needed to go out to hunt for food

Wrong. Watch this video. You can even see parts of the original WoW cinematic in this where Grizzly Adams is with the bear on the mountain and that scene was a copy of the dwarf with his bear overlooking Iron Forge. If you can find it there’s an old interview with one of the devs talking about it.

It’s more than likely based off of D&D where the Ranger has an animal companion that helps them fight
warcraft came out in 1994

Hunters were inspired by Pokemon, in one episode Ash accidently pulls aggro with barrage and so it came to be.
