I think they have just always been like that.

They came from the wild god Aviana, which is funny cuz apparently Aviana is a “good” wild god, and the descendents all suck. But I guess the same can be said for centaurs

According to Brann Bronzebeard research, harpies are descended from Aviana. Other legends about harpies claim that they are descended from a group of female night elves who betrayed, and were cursed as punishment, but those have been dismissed as mere stories and they truly come from Aviana.

I think Aviana’s less a “good” wild god so much as “not actively opposing us”.

With lovely voices like those, it’s no wonder they’re always angry. Have to listen to themselves every day.

They went mad when Aviana was slain, and their sacred tree was defiled.

After that, many harpies became power hungry, and dove into fel and shadow magic.

After Cata, and Aviana’s resurrection, you can find a number of friendly Harpie NPC’s, and lore says that many more of her children returned to the fold.

Can’t believe an entire thread’s worth of people beat me to it. :frowning:

Where is this said? I’ve always figured that this would be the case after her return, but I hadn’t seen any sources to back it up.

Plus, without G’hanir the Tree, I figured it would be an even slower thing.

Harpies are children of Aviana.

After Aviana was murdereded, a mysterious dark force took over the Harpies, making them mean.

I hope Aviana will one day take her children back and make nice Harpies

Will your succubi friends get along with your harpy friends, Mr. Mortis?

They already do!

How’s Aviana going to make them nice Harpies when she’s not a nice Harpy?

That Harpies used to be much less evil is implied when you’re forced to listen to Jala Rivermane in Highmountain for a WQ. She states that the Harpies of the mountain lost what respect they had for nature long ago. Given that, it’s Highmountain lore that Harpies used to be respectful of nature.

if they were once elves they were once trolls, I want some tusky harpys now.

She was never good or evil. She’s a bird of prey. Just like Aessina, her ways are wild and fierce, yet can also be seen as gentle and warm.

The harpies betrayed what they were for darker powers. It was never Aviana’s intention for them to become what they are and we even kill them for Aviana.

Can harpies make love with other races?

Because I noticed they are naked, and have tried to zoom in and stuff but can’t see anything down there. Or do they just lay eggs? Where do they come out of?

Also if say a harpy made love with me, would orcs come out of her eggs - if they do lay eggs.

Harpies conclusively lay eggs. There’s a number of quests that has us breaking them to curb their numbers.

To be fair, she claims anything with feathers as her children.

Even a flightless hawkstrider.

I do remember reading years ago that Harpies were once elves.

She claims all feathered or winged creatures as her children. In the War of the Ancients books she talked to Krasus/Korialstrasz and she showed him G’hanir. When there he could see the spirits of eagles, sparrows, dragons, and every other winged being you could think of soaring in the boughs. She was like: “Yo, there’s a spot here for you when you die”

Personally, I’d like to see a faction of sorta friendly/neutral harpies in the future.

Yes, but Harpies are literal children of Aviana.

That’s why they look exactly like her. Unlike the hawkstriders.

The “Harpies are former elves” thing has been confirmed to be just baseless legends. Just like Dryads, Harpies look like Elves. So it’s easy to make the connection.

Or rather, Night Elves look like some Wild Gods (Cenarius and Aviana). They were already there before elves were a thing lol
