I’m looking at what talents were offered for various classes and it looks like some of them are better than what hero talents have turned out to be minus the cosmetic effects.
Warlords class design was abysmal.
No.
For WW, they were basically buffs to Roll’s distance and an increase to SCK’s travel speed. They were so mid that Blizzard just baked them into the abilities at the end of WoD so folks no longer “earned” them as they leveled from 90-100.
I guess I didn’t see all of them. Fury, Feral and Enhancement weren’t that bad. Retribution looked almost useless at least single target. Shadow was ok.
Draenor perks were weird. You couldn’t pick them. You got what you were given. And by the end of leveling you had them all.
So for all practical gameplay intents and purposes, they weren’t a thing. There was zero player input attached to it.
isn’t that like how hero talents are now?
You have a choice of two tracks. You take all of the “hero talents” in the one you chose. There is little choice of what to do with your points in that tree. Even the ones where you must choose between one and the other are about the same. You just take them all.

Ok, I googled these to remember them better.
LOL - These were NOT hero talents.
These were Blizzard’s exuse to give us SOMETHING while we levelled up to help give the illusion we were getting stronger. For this reason, all of them made something you already had stronger rather than give something new.
Also, no, that’s not like hero talents that take a spell and make it a new one. Draenoe perks were much like “that spell now has a 2 minute CD instead of 3 minutes” because the developers always intended it to be 2 minutes.
In summary, there weren’t stronger than hero talents nor envision to fill the same role. Perks were just something to make levelling more interesting and completely forgotten at end game because all mages / class had the exact same perks. Like I said, you simply became the class that the developers had designed.
I liked draenor peeks but like hero talents more
Some Hero Trees certainly got less love than others, but I think it’s hard to argue that WoD perks were better across the board.
WoD perks were just passive efects, whereas a lot of Hero Trees have a much bigger impact on the overall feel of specialisations.
For example, the two main specs I play.
Unholy DK: WoD Perks
- Dark Transformation no longer costs runes
- Fallen Crusader heals for an additional 3%
- Gargoyle lasts for 10 seconds longer
- Soul Reaper deals additional damage to targets below 45% health instead of 35% health
Unholy DK: Hero Tree (Rider of the Apocalypse)
- Spending runes has chance to summon Horseman for 10 seconds
- Death’s Advance now mounts you on a horse, breaks movement impairing effects and makes it so you cannot be slowed below 100% instead of 70%
- Horsemen occasionally cast Anti-Magic Shell on you and themselves at 80% efficiency
- When Scourge Strike damages an enemy infected by Undeath it gains a stack and spreads to nearby enemies
- Army of the Dead also summons all 4 Horsemen for 20 seconds
Frost Mage: WoD Perks
- Each time Blizzard deals damage it reduces the CD of Frozen Orb by 0.5 seconds
- Frostbolt’s CD is reduced by 0.5 seconds, every 15 seconds
- Ice Veins provides 10% more haste
- Water Elemental gains Water Jet (a channel that gives you Fingers of Frost procs via Frostbolts that hit the same target as the channel)
Frost Mage: Hero Tree (Frostfire)
- Frostbolt is replaced by Frostfire Bolt which stacks haste and mastery (with all frost spells stacking mastery and all fire spells stacking haste)
- Frost and fire spells have a chance to launch an additional bolt of frostfire
- Frost and fire spells have a chance to make your next Frostfire Bolt instant cast, deal 60% additional damage and deal 80% of its damage to nearby enemies
- Comet Storm also calls down a Meteor
- Hitting max frost stacks causes Flurry to cast Ice Nova on the target at 125% efficiency and reduces the CD of Comet Storm by 5 seconds
- Hitting max fire stacks causes your next Ice Lance to infect the target with Living Bomb, which grants a Brain Freeze proc when it explodes
- Activating Icey Veins gives you the proc that makes your Frostfire Bolt instant cast etc.
That isn’t even all of the Hero Talents in a single tree, nor both trees available to either spec. It’s just my preferred trees and some of the more impactful talents I tend to take.
Hero Trees seem far more impactful to me, and I think that’s true for most specs in the game.
No they were not.
What could you like about them?
I mean, all members of at class at end-game had the exact same perks.
It’s not like a mage choosing between spellslinger or sunfury.
Everyone was the same.
Whenever everyone’s blink goes further, that’s not a perk, that’s just the way it now works in WoD.
They were just perks. You also got talent points as you level
Good god I don’t even remember WoD did that
Those multiboxing 5 hunters with stampede suddenly dropping 25 instant pets, if you didnt lag out from them you definitely died getting smacked around. Lynx Rush, it was hilarious with a bear pet.
And catman druid.
