On my first WRA character (Edit: first Alliance character, I mean), I kept adding and adding to the About section in the TRP, until it got obnoxiously long until I just deleted the whole thing one day. Then I had the character killed off.
Starting over with new alts, barely anything is in the TRP. Nice and simple. I’m taking inspiration from some of the other RPers I see on the server who have infinitely more RP experience than I do. How is it possible that their characters are so freakin’ in-depth with many layers, and yet the only thing they have filled out is a couple of lines in the IC and OOC sections of the TRP (not even any “glances” for some!). Yet their characters are awesome. And people know about their characters.
A note on walkups: I’ve been experimenting with this, over the past several days. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve noticed a trend—people tend to be afk or alt-tabbed out in the park / lion’s rest area. Same with Mage’s quarter, I think. I question the people who have “walkups welcomed!” in their TRP, and sit around afk in the game. The Cathedral square is probably my favorite place to RP at the moment; weird things happen there for some reason, and I love it. I like that there is a Clinic there, too. I think it would be cool if the Guards/Watch had a secondary outpost across the square from the clinic, like by the mail box.
On Jasemias, my forsaken DK, in his About section, it says that line from the DK starting zone: “The life he lived before is meaningless.” Boom. Simple. Easy. Gets me out of having to study the WoW lore, too. 'Cause I’m lazy about lore.
If you’re upset about not getting the RP you want, you have to make it your responsibility to make it yourself. That is going to involve you walking up to random people and interacting with them - not to the point of breaking in on their RP, mind, unless it’s just a casual conversation that you overheard and wanted to join in on. Most folks are usually receptive to that and it’s a bad RPer that OOC’ly tells someone to go away without a specific reason.
Other than that, guilds and communities are the most important outlet for structured RP.
Responding to any complaints by counter accusations instead of addressing the problem? The prevalence of this attitude was what caused Horde RP on Moon Guard to start circling the drain.
Something I’ve talked about before, and I feel it is a good time to reiterate it here: there is RP; it just isn’t the type of RP you are looking for. And that is okay! You can be picky. I can imagine you didn’t walk up to absolutely everyone you could. You chose one or two encounters. And often when your emote is ignored or you don’t see any posts, it is because people do not always like interruptions. It is always a good thing to DM them ahead of time. If anything, walk-up is dumb and outdated. Yeah, I said it. Randomly walking up is an outdated way of initiating RP. Make friends OOC! Discuss ways to interact and if they have any ideas, or if this is a good time. Communicate before meandering up to them. The goal isn’t to just RP, right? You want meaningful connections. That’s how you do it. Walk-up isn’t the bee’s knees.
The problem with new WoW RPers is that a lot of new WoW RPers are new RPers in general, and there are a lot of bad habits that everyone has had growing pains with over the years. And there are several people that have been on this server since its creation that just do not have the energy to take care of and mentor someone like that. So if you are just new to WoW RP, but not new to RP in general, perhaps expand upon that in your profile, or do not put it in at all. Addons like TRP3 have an option that you can use to indicate your experience.
Otherwise, good luck if you do not stay on WRA. Each server has their nuances but usually the same kind of attitudes as we swap back and forth (take me as an example; I play both WRA and MG).
I addressed and offered up a solution to his problem; walk up yourself. Just because you have ‘walk ups wanted’ in the OoC section of your TRP profile doesn’t mean you should expect people to fall into your lap and RP with you.
He said that players were stuck in their comfortable clique bubbles… I was only pointing out he was no different than the people he was criticizing.
