Weird Macro Inconsistency Across Classes

So I use this macro on my paladin for interrupting in M+ because it essentially takes the effort out of having to hit tab because the game’s innate targeting system will automatically prioritize an enemy who is casting an interruptible spell. It works 100% of the time without fail and I’ve never had an issue with it.

#showtooltip Rebuke
/cleartarget
/targetenemy
/cast Rebuke

When I tried to share the macro with my mage friend by changing rebuke to counterspell, the macro does not work as intended. It does not change targets when the current target is not casting and another nearby enemy is.
I have seen other posts from 2023 saying that /cleartarget was bugged but nothing in recent months. It doesn’t make sense that it works fine with one spell and not another. I have tried testing it on my own mage and can’t get consistent results with identical variables. It doesn’t seem to matter if the targets are far away or in melee range, it just will not work for counterspell.
Anyone have any ideas?

I use the same targeting macro in most of my offensives and man its been whacky as hades for the last while now. having to target with a button press anyway…never had much problem with it until they added that crap sticky targeting or whatever its called.

sometimes I have to delete a macro and type it all out again and delete the existing one for some reason…had to do that a lot, actually. Macro just doesnt work…or one thats BEEN working stops working and literally retyping it and saving it in a NEW macro slot and deleting the old one fixes the issue…go figure

Could it have to do with it being a melee ability vs spell? Or distance?
