Hi, this may sound like a stupid question (I have never played shaman and am returning to the game) but can shamans use two handed hammers and axes at all? Or are they restricted to one handed only?

i don’t think so anymore. i know in the past they could use 2handers like in classic but i think they are strictly 1handers now.
Shaman can wield and earn transmogs for 2H Maces and Axes (and Staves).
If you play Enhancement, though, you need to dual wield 1H Maces, Axes, and Fist Weapons in order to use your active melee abilities, which deal the majority of your damage nowadays.
