Weapon Damage Range — Is There a Point?

This might be a dumb question. I don’t know.

Does weapon damage range matter? All things being equal (ilevel, stats, DPS, weapon speed), what is the point of varying degrees of damage range?

Take the “Dragoon’s Volley Gun” and compare it to the “Houndmaster’s Bow” from the reworked BRD celebration nonsense. Same ilevel. Same speed. Same DPS. Roughly the same secondary stats. Bow has a funny flavor bonus versus beasts, but they’re essentially the same weapon… except damage range. The normal mode damage ranges for comparison:

Dragoon’s Volley Gun — 4055 - 7533.
Houndmaster’s Bow — 4924 - 6664.

Obviously I should pick the bow because not only does it do extra damage TO beasts, it also summons THE BEAST. Anyway… what’s with the damage range difference? And to repeat DOES IT MATTER IN ANY WAY NOW?

Thanks for your time.

Both weapons are the same ilevel and same speed, why do they have different damage ranges?

Different auto attacks damage.

Nowadays it doesn’t make much difference but back in old times, more skills were doing weapon dmg (which is a dice roll between min & max of your dmg range) + %ap

So you could play it safe with the lowest range or gamble with the biggest.
