Does the currency go poof and disappear from your bags if you don’t use it? You could get loot as you are pushing keys and upgrade when you meet your limit and need better gear. You act like you are supposed to upgrade every thing that drops. I bet you spent all your valor on +2 drops and complained you used up the cap.
Also, no you literally do not need to run lower keys because you could always downgrade your crests.

I think once you reach the cap of a given crest for the content, for example Aspect Crests, doing that same content should then drop the next lowest tier crest (Wyrm).
Although with the crest caps being so high in a few weeks it won’t matter as the crest cap, even converting aspect to wyrm, will exceed how many you would ever need.
